Well I'm in the market for a new bike to replace my old '98 diamond back, I was riding it on Saturday and broke the back detreiler some how. Just have no clue as to a cheap bike that would be good new or used doesn't matter. My budget is about $300ish looking for a hard tail with good front suspension with the possibility of disc brakes up front, I'm only riding it on the street but there are some pothoes around here as deep as the grand canyon. Only requirement I have is that I have room on the back to mount my electric bike motor/batteries.

So what should I be looking for?

Craigslist or ebay are going to be your best bet for that price range. Dont get discs in the rear if you want to easily put a rack on there that will hold a motor and batteries. I suggest looking for a Trek 7.X (7.3,7.5,7.6) FX bike. If you are only on the street they will be better.

Ya saw some treks on craigslist but they wanted way too much for most of them. I'm looking at a specialized that this guy wants 175 for but he hasn't replied yet.

Judging by the pic, it looks to be in the 20" frame range. This bike should sell for somewhere around $350-400 used. New was in the 800 range.

Another nice bike, this bike sells for 400, offer 275, as long as it is as new as he says.

This all depends on what size you ride though.

you are going to want a 19 or 20" maybe a 21" with some hybrids. Some hybrids have a very short top tube and you might want to go up a size.
