Hey guys,

I was up at Wal-Mart looking at poles because I need a ned one. Last year I got pissed at Canonsburg lake and broke my old one. Im looking at the Shakesphere Ugly Stick, my question is how long is right right for me? Im 5'9 and some of the rode where taller than me, ive seen the deep see rods and they are insane.I assume that the longer is is the futher casts and the short the closer they are. I do about 50/50 on land and boat fishing.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Barry -

Depends more on what you're fishing for than your size. Not trying to talk to ya like a 3rd grader or anything, but usually you wanna match the fish to the rod; not gonna use a 6 1/2 ft heavy action Ugly Stik with a level wind reel on trout in a stream, just like an ultra-light spinning setup won't net you many pike or musky.

You'd probably wanna grab a medium or light action rod & spinning reel for the type of fishing you seem to do (mixed shore & boat) since you'll probably be pulling in bass, crappy & other small to medium sized fish. If you plan on musky, cats etc, go heavier. Ugly Stiks are nice rods for the money, I have a couple myself & like 'em. I know you're on the ever present budget, but nothing says you gotta have just 1!!

Hope that helps...

this is why i have 4 rods.

my ultra light rod is my favorite. 4 ft long and you can feel the slightest nibbles on your rob. when you catch a big one you feel like moby dick is on your line!

I have a variety of ugly sticks. Great rods. Pick up some 6# test and a good spinning real and you're good to go. I like shimano for the spinners & Abu-Garcia for the bait casters, there's a bunch though.

I don't know if you can fly fish aroudn here but I tried it a couple times out in Colorado and it was really fun. It was better than just regular fishing because you didn't get bored just sitting there.

i only stream/ river fish. i can't lake/ boat fish unless i am drinking.....which gives me something more to do than just sit there.

Thanks guys,

Last summer I caught a decent amount of bass mostly small mouth and the ever favorite blue gill.

Thats my main focus this year is bass. So it sounds like I should get a 4' Ugly Stick then with 6lbs test? I have a favorite gig I like to use the simple bullet sinker and fake worm and I love that set up.

On another note, any of you guys fish down at Canonsburg lake/ dam?

Thanks.

That should be a great setup for bass. Like previously mentioned, you will feel everything on a nice light weight rod and you won't be dissapointed with the ugly stick. Good luck.

You could drop down to a lighter line even if you are mainly fishing for blugill and smaller bass. Anything that makes the fight more interesting is good with me.

when i was around six years old i was fishing in my parents pond with a rubber worm and a bobber and i caught a 21 inch bass, it almost pulled me in the pond, you catch a lot on those damn rubber worms

I went out for about 3 hours, a few bites, no fish. Could have been to hot.
