View Full Version : Bending some tube

i got my jd2 bender set up tonight and started patterning it. got the deduct, back of 90, and centers of most popular bends figured out as well as the gain. using all of this math, i started a set of nerf bars for the TJ and only had 1" of waste. :icon_super:

i'm ready to start making sport cages, nerf bars, front sport bars, anything out of tubing. i have 1.75" dies right now, and may buy different ones if theres enough interest. so if anyones interested in anything, let me know.

heres the start of my nerf bars, i need to get the body lift on before i finish and mount them

Justin, are you using bend tech software or ?

you live up in chicora right?

i was gonna buy bendtech pro, but from what i have been reading, that really only works well if you have a computerized bender (for programming the bends), or are gonna be making complex chassis'. the measurements and markings i have made on my bender should be enough to make it very effective, i can center any degree of bend, forward 90's, back of 90's etc. so, i can keep all bends as tight and precise to what i need (around a dashboards for example) and have as little waste as possible. since most sport cages are gonna be custom, an angle finder, square, and a few other tools will do most of what i need. when i make a few bucks, i will get a tubing notcher and bag the grinder, then i will look into the software a lil more... but for now i think precise measurements will go a long way.

yep, chicora, right on 268 about a mile down from the hometown grill

No need for a computer. We use bend tech pro all the time. Its all manual labor.

How are you doing pricing, and how soon would you be looking into other dies? I'm considering 1.5" tube for front and rear fender flares as well as a hood hoop and maybe a set of shock hoops. This wouldn't be for a few more months prob I'm just trying to lay out a few ideas for when I get that far.

i am set up and ready to go. i have 64' of DOM .120 wall tubing here, and it takes me about 4 days to get more. i paid 4.15 per foot, thats what i'll charge for it. i was thinking $150 for a front sport hoop/spreaders, $300 for a basic full sport cage till i get a feel for how much time i will have into it, it may go up but probably not too much. these prices will be plus material of course. my hourly rate is $30 for fab work, $25 for general mechanical work, but i usually charge by the job and most people say i under charge, but this stuff funds my jeep addiction. i do this in the evenings and on the weekends.

peccavil18, i'll pick up 1.5 dies if i can get a few projects off of the bender. i'd like to do some tube fenders and rear flares for my cj too, so a 1.5 is a soon to buy set,so when your ready, if you want me to do the work, i'll buy the dies.

my phone # is 724 816 4914 if anyone wants to give me a call.

WOW! if your gonna do a "full" cage your gonna have $300 into tubing. Not trying to be a dick but you might want to slow down on throwing prices out til you actually do 1 and see whats involved. dont sell yourself short.

heck ill buy toob fenders of you could make them for a tj

slow down and read there skippy, i didnt figure you were being a dick. i said all prices PLUS material @4.15 a foot. for a basic cage, wich we will call 6 points and for a jeep. for other vehicles it may be more, and start adding extra spreaders, seat tie ins, etc its gonna go up. i figured for $300 plus material, someone gets a sport cage for a good price and i know how to price after that. i am not a newb to pipe bending or welding.

i'll be doin some tube fenders in the near future.

Hey Justin, since when do you have a TJ?

I'm gonna save your number, for when I get that far along. I will prob have the tube already, I plan to get some to add triangulation/supports to the cage anyways. What I'll be looking for is pretty custom, Rev111 style fronts and rears but with a few changes.

Long down the road I might be intrested in the tube fenders.

let me know, i am up for challenges and one off custom stuff. so bring ideas around and we'll make it all work

Sweet brother

Once I get a solid tub on the 92' YJ, I'll have to be getting ahold of you to do a grill hoop, windshield hoop, spreader bars and frame tie in's :gear_cool2:

Well, if you're taking orders and serious about doing work, I'm going to need an interior cage in the xj at some point this year. I'd like to get together with you before hand and give you my ideas. When you're ready of course.

What radius die do you have? I just ordered another 1-1/2 die for mine. what size do they use for tube fenders?

justin'sbig7
05-14-2009, 05:22 PM
i have a 5.5" radius die. not sure what they use elsewhere. i havent ought a 1.5" die yet. what radius did you get?

CESCO

on the 1-1/2 dies I have 4-1/2" and 6".

justin'sbig7
05-14-2009, 07:20 PM
nice. i'll prolly get the 4.5 radius die.... if i can sell my car, i may just pick it up real soon. i lean toward tighter radii for doing things like sport cages. etc

for my cage I ended up using an exhaust bender for the 2" part of the cage. my 2" tube die is worn out and needs to be replaced. I used my bender for the 1-1/4" and 1-1/2" stuff.. like everything else I do I got in a hurry to get it put in and just through it together.

Just found this and thought it may give you a few ideas. Some prices are really good other ones...WOW
digging the narrow tube fender kit, and rear fender flares, and rear stinger kit.

Was it hard to get the hang of? I gotta start bending soon and I'm worried I'll waste a bunch of expensive tube getting the hang of it.
4.15 a foot! Damn... I need 60 foot of 5/8" DOM soon.

look up electrical conduit bending theory. i am an electrician by trade, so it was absolutely no different than what i do at work. once i patterned my bender, i have had maybe a foot of scrap total with what i have done.

the tubing i got is 1.75" O.D. i would imagine .675 (5/8") would be cheaper

the easiest thing to do notches is call a jig-a-joint. i have one it is great. i picked it up for 130. look one up totally worth every penny no stinking grinding or filing

can you send me a link to where you got it? the only ones i found were $320... that is a nice notcher either way.

I have one from harbor freight. not quality but it works. the only thing that I did to it was add a copper washer on the arbor so I could get the holesaw off of it.

i saw the holesaw types, but the jig a joint is a nibbler... kinda works like a knockout punch tool just lever operated

When I do offsets I use a conduit bending handbook aka electricians handbook so that's where it's at.

heres a link to the one i found

although the holesaw ones are definitely better if you are notching something that you cant carry to a bench
