+1. A .380 is a little better than a sharp stick.

like i said it would be a back up.like they say one is none and two is one!

^ what line of work you in where you need a back up pistol. usually, the average citizen who can shoot accurately will have more than enough fire power with one gun. if it's not a wimpy gun.

If you need one gun then you need two. I didn't make that up, ;) but I forget who said it. Also, the wimpy .380 that you have with you is better than the bigger gun you left at home because it was too big, you couldn't conceal it well, it was too heavy, blah, blah, blah.

I personally carry a Glock G17 most often but my Kahr P9 is more comfortable and more concealable. As long as someone has put in the necessary thought, training and practice I'm not going to second guess their carry choice too much.

Kahr P9

Nice gun. Shoots great! Long trigger pull though.

The first day I got it I shot a ground hog in the garden at about 30 yards and said " wow, this gun makes even me look like a good shot" :)

For the price spend the extra coin and back a sub-compact glock or a revolver.... Then you wouldn't need to carry two guns ;)

you can kill someone/something with a slingshot if you do it right....i'd take a small gun....just enough to wound someone in the leg then i'd walk up to them and beat them to death with a rock :D

I carry a Taurus pt 111 Tatum/millennium 9mm,the back up is not for work iam a industrial painter i can shoot very accurately i guess it wouldn't be a back up but something a little less bulky to carry in the summer months. Iam not saying the 9mm is bulky its not, its a sub compact and weights about 16oz and holds ten rounds.I was just looking for something smaller to fit in the pocket of my shorts, i really dont want to go to a smaller caliber maybe a smaller frame. So any input in my search would be helpful.I guess the shit would really of hit the fan if i said i wanted a beretta bobcat or a derringer!

hmm i see what you want to do with the smaller gun...

carrying in your pocket took be by surprise.....does anyone else carry a gun loosely in their pocket? i'd feel a little insecure with a gun in my pocket... i'd probably reach in for it and shoot my pecker off.

I have a Bersa .380 that i picked up for under 200 bucks.

it shoots dead nuts on every time. The wife is comfortable with it, so it's typically "her" gun and stays with her.

I carry a S&W 642 in my pocket quite safely.

Who are you?

Why have a back-up pistol?

Consider this scenario-

You and your wife are walking somewhere. You're jumped from behind by an armed mugger. He puts a gun to the back of your head and says he will kill you if you move. He makes you put your hands in the air while he frisks you. He takes your gun and turns his attention to your wife's purse. While the mugger thinks you're disarmed you take advantage of his attention elsewhere and use your back-up gun that is concealed elsewhere to the best of its abilities. Think about it...

I bought my wife a used chrome .380 at a gunshop in St. Marys. I was in there buying some Hydra Shocks for my .44 Mag and it looked shiny in the case. At 100 bones the price seemed right. But the damn thing is crap. It has a 5 rd clip and only the first two will come up. The others stay pressed down in the clip. And the two that do make it out of the clip usually jam before they even get chambered. Made by Cobra Enterprises in Salt Lake City. Junk! I should have taken it right back but I didn't get a chance to shoot it for like a year after I got it. I like the size of the .380 though. I can carry it in my pocket and you would never even know it was there. I think a lot of people carry smaller caliber because the idea is to use the weapon as a deterrent. You don't need to kill some one you just need the attack to stop.

i thought that too .... til the day comes where you cant get to your main gun for what ever reason. i carry the SR9 and the .380 acp by RUGER.

watch the TV show ... BEST DEFENSE on the outdoor channel. they will agree ... more often then not you will be able to use your main gun .. however ... you should have a second backup weapon .... .380 , knife , batton anything. they even showed how to use an ink pen as a secondary weapon. i think the nice thing of a small .380 is you can carry it in a pocket and like me who usually walks in unknown areas with my hands in my jacket pocket ... that small gun can give me either a chance to get to my 9mm or scare the attacker off.

just my 2 cents

AGREED 100 % however kill or be killed !

with a .380 you have to find the correct ammo. some brands will jamb up and other will not, just because mine will shoot one brand does not mean your will. it took me 4 boxes of ammo to find the right combo of target and self defense ammo.

2nd .... any mag of any cal. ..... you have to remove the ammo 1 time a month at least and oil the spring ... and do not store a mag with ammo in it. the sping WILL compress and loose it ability to push the next round up.

that company does suck. best thing to do with it ... through away the original mags ..... buy aftermarket. Cobra Ent. uses cheap parts in thier guns and even cheaper parts in the mags.

This seems to make sense, but I don't know if it's true. There's been A LOT of discussion about this on many gun boards. Many believe that mag springs wear out from use rather than the constant compression of a loaded mag.

Personally, I give my mag springs a break if and when I think about it. But for the most part I leave them loaded. I'd think the best bet would to play it safe and replace them once in a while.

jim91303
07-24-2009, 02:28 PM
i agree .... replace once and a while. i have 2 mag minimum per gun. i rotate the usage. this way 1 or more mags will be loaded for not longer then 1 month then the others are empty for 1 month.

i think the springs are like any other spring .... look at screan doors that have a spring ... leaf and coils on our cars and trucks ... the larger the spring and harder the material the longer it will last .... smaller springs ... will wear faster or should i say sooner. either way your beliefs are on mag springs ... that is the #1 cuase of rounds not being chanbered right causing jamming. (asfar as mags go) ammo manurfacturing is a runner up as a tie for #1 cause for jamming.
