So my brother calles me yesterday to tell me his Jeep (a '95 Orvis) was towed to a mechanics after the front end was spewing out thick gray/white smoke.

Guy tells him his rad, water pump and hoses are shot and that he needs other stuff for inspection.

Considering that he has beat the sh-t out of this I told him I would "take it off his hands" provided that he can get something to drive around in. Regardless he still can't drive it in it's current state so we are going to tow it to my house (where I get to play mad scientist on it) in the interim. :077:

It is still mainly stock, although it is an Orvis; he has thrashed the seats and the headliner is about shot. Aside from fixing the engine to it can be driven I was looking at riping out the capets and headliner and laying down some durabak or something and then wheeling the hell out of the b-tch.

Ok. I finally pried the keys out of my brothers hands.

The pictures do it way better justice. So far it runs but not as well as I had hoped. I know I have to replace the radiator, and lines. Water pump is holding it's own; not sure if I want to mess with it. It needs a tune up. The transfer case will not switch from all time 4wheel to low, the lever won't move at all and the transmission takes about 5 seconds from the time you shift until it bolts into gear.

All and all I say it was worth the hostile take over :040:

Here are some crappy pictures:

I bet the transmission is just low on fluid... Those seats are wild, is that stock?

Yep completely stock except for the radio and the dents.

Jack azz broke the drivers seat. Right where it bolts onto the rail. I will have to attempt to do something with it.

According to some website wiki I was reading that is how they rolled out. The 1996 (I think) came in tan?

I have always wanted one of these ever since I started driving. I am just glad he didn't give it to me in the condition his last jeep was in. (broke down and just after a T-Bone with a 1ton recovery vehicle)

I just did a tranny fluid/filter change on my 95 ZJ last weekend. Messy job but easy enough and cheap to do. Might be worth it to see if it improves shifting. If the lever on the 4wd won't move, maybe the linkage is bound up. I've had to lube mine up before after it got all full of junk and then rusted.

When do we take the sawzall to the front bumper?

I am hoping that a fluid change would do the trick.
Linkage eh.. A good starting point. Beats the method I was going to start with.

I am not sure what I want to do with the bumpers. I didn't get a good shot of the back one but that is definately coming off. Apparently he had a run in with a fire hydrant. All along the passenger side, including (and I am not sure how) the front corner behind the front tire. It is almost like he was trying to roll over it like a rock and bumped it.

I was thinking of taking all the fancy moulding off and filling it in and then painting it over.

First things first though...the nasty smelly carpet has to go.

Thanks.

Tire is in the garage. I will probably have the guy that is inspecting the TJ mount it for me.

The carpet is probably rank because the HVAC system spits water onto the passenger side floor when you run the defrost or A/C. A brilliant engineering move to put the A/C drain inside a sealed frame rail in the engine bay. The carpet is missing in mine for that reason. I keep a chamois in the jeep when I have to mop up water. You can drill a hole in the plastic housing and shove a coathanger in there to try to clear the drain, but half the time it will leak anyway.

I think a filter/gasket kit at Advance is about $6, but you do have to use the Mopar fluid.

I picked up a heavy duty 3 row rad for mine from Radiator Barn. Pretty cheap shipped to your door. The water pump either works or doesn't, but I had to change mine two years ago. Might be a good pm thing to do while you have the rad out.

After sitting in the garage for a couple of months and going over every square inch like a mad man I have finally rolled it out for some fresh air.

I have removed the carpet, fixed the broken seat bracket, just about fixed the rear passenger door handle (just need to put it back on), fixed the problem with the transmission (low on fluid) and decided to see what the radiator will do with some stop leak (since it isn't leaking anymore).

I still have to mess with the transfer case but Heather is of no help to me so that may wait for the springtime. It needs a little cleaning inside just to give it a starting or reference point.

I have found that there are 4 things that I need to address and then it is off to get stickers. :040:
1. I overlooked a penny sized hole in the drivers rear tail light. 2. The temp. gague isn't working. 3. I need to check all the brakes for complience. 4. The brakes stay on because the switch is sticking. It is fine if you give a pull upward on the pedal but that is going to get old quick so I may as well just replace it.

I will post up some pictures tonight or tomorrow. Still on the list is the headliner, recharge the A/C, a tune up, change the fluid on the diffs and the transfer case, and fix why the transfer case will not shift.

jason, if you need to fix that t case you can bring it over here and put it on my pit, we can change that t case in about an hour ( i have lots of practice...lol)

and it probably wont shift because the linkage is screwed up, probably just needs adjusted...

Sweet. I may put the TJ on jack stands and bring the tires for that too. Maybe the 26th? I have drill the weekend before that. Once I get the stickers I will have a better idea of a date.

I am hopeful that it is the linkage but the guy that my brother got it from said not to bother with the shifter because it isn't going to work. His dad was a mechanic so I am not so optimistic that it is going to be a simple fix.

Took some pictures:

That dent is from the jack. Apparently he didn't use the correct jack point when changing a tire one time.

The bolt that sits inside the handle on the right side broke. I had to drill the plastic and put one in and then use epoxy glue to keep it in place. That will go in tomorrow.

That is it so far. Sorry no pictures of my crappy welds for the seat bracket. They hold and that is all I need.

Finished putting in the radiator last night. Flushed out the old coolant and added the new stuff. Pulled the wheels and checked the brakes and went over it again to make sure it was good for inspection. Drove it out to get some gas (about 2 miles one way) and it was great.

I did notice that there is a loud humming from the rear end though. I will remove the dif cover and check it out and go from there. This is the first all time 4WD I have owned but I am pretty sure it isn't supposed to hum.

Everything being fair (and me finding a tail light this weekend) I will have it to the mechanic for inspection on Monday. Then it is destined to be a mall crawler until the summer.
