:023:Well I have been talking a lot about this vehicle I've been building. So here it is and how it got there. I forgot to take alot of pics throughout the process but did manage to get some.

For those of you that don't know me, I used to have a 95 Tacoma with 275,000 miles and Yes I wheeled it!!!

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3168/2751954222_63b24a927e_b.jpg
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3049/2643946816_442bbf616b_b.jpg

My Daughter wanted to be able to remove the roof and haul more people, so I started looking for a 4Runner. I found this one on craigslist and bought it.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3450/3401764482_e1950b3491_b.jpg

It also came with a few extra parts!!!! :119:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3661/3400961047_d46868e0b8_b.jpg

While I was waiting for the Tacoma to sell I was busy rounding up parts and found these axles on Pirate. They were located in St. Louis, so we made a short vacation out of it.
Thanks Honey!!!

Once I started cutting shit out I forgot to take Pics. Oh Well.
Here is the frame all fround down and shot with some primer for the time being
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3428/3401766782_99bc17c546_b.jpg

I found a little more rust than I originally knew about. Time to make things stronger!!!

Here I am getting ready to cut out the soft front crossmember
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3562/3400952525_2d2a29981e_b.jpg

Behind that, the frame was a little soft, so out with that also. I'm really loving that Plasma cutter!!!
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3602/3401759034_e963ce760f_b.jpg

Got things squared up for some new metal
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3630/3400954565_bb752852fc_b.jpg

I think this will be strong enough. I got some 2.5 x 3/16 thick square tubing for the front crossmember. I also welded up the front spring hanger. All the nuts were welded in the backside for the new bumper I ordered.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3593/3401764086_2b21157978_b.jpg

I replated the bad section of frame with some 1/4 since the steering box wwill be here
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3578/3400960237_8db458ef57_b.jpg

Made this nice little gusset for the front spring hanger
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2470/3608359107_4034cc3232_b.jpg

All welded in
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3349/3609175530_0aabbfde49_b.jpg

Time to take care of the floorboards
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3543/3401757028_50b108af15_b.jpg

This should be enough!!!http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3607/3401766090_1dcb723e92_b.jpg

I cut the fire wall back 3.5" to make room for the tires I will be running.
Santa came a little early and got me a new garage toy. This baby jacks up to 32" Thanks Mom and Dad!!!
This is also a pic of my axle all gusseted up. And no, I did not weld the axle gusset in one pass. I would do a one inch weld on each side and wait for it to cool. Don't want to warp
the axle tube!!!!
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3575/3642332329_70109e73b2_b.jpg

Got some new metal in along with a new lower rocker panel. I sealed everything up with some good ole 3M seam sealer.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3351/3608464127_3fef435755_b.jpg

The passenger side was not as extreme, due to actually having some good metal

Time to work on the rear
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3572/3400948069_af763efa52_b.jpg

Thanks for the extra hand when I needed it Corey!!! Even though you always told the wife how much shit cost!!!
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3604/3400942011_0571a6d407_b.jpg

Got the rear axle out. All the rust and fiberglass removed and the rear wheel wells tubbed.

Got the dual tranfercses built using a Marlin adapter and sat it all on an All pro Triple x crossmember with parking brake.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3587/3401752046_0dd405e865_b.jpg

The new crossmember made a huge difference with ground clearance compared to the old one.
Before:

After:
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3579/3401755412_93b2a3d731_b.jpg

I did have to modify the horseshoe collar to clear a rear cv shaft and make a few BFH adjustment to the tranny tunnel.
Before:
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3407/3608455889_6b3f1debef_b.jpg

After:
I used a piece of 6"OD 1/4" wall dom tubing that my Dad got for me. Thanks Dad!!!

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3626/3609181036_274b105a91_b.jpg

Hope I can remember what gear I am in.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3466/3400928379_6e6a177210_b.jpg

Removed all the stereo wirng and Amps. Things were grounded to plastic inserts and unfused. Not good!!!
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2441/3609268684_9a2a12e41a_b.jpg

Time to work on the steering
Got the box all tapped and ready for Hydro assist.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3573/3400933775_90cd033c8a_b.jpg

Added a few plates to strengthen up the frame and got the box mounted
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3408/3609277028_f4d11a3bc1_b.jpg

Got the box pushed pretty far forward but took it real easy on cutting the rad support. I only cut what I had to.

Modified my steering shaft ushing some 1" schedule 40 pipe
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2423/3609287528_c6562fd022_b.jpg

Finished: (Note I did not have to have the shaft pulled out this far when mounted on truck.)
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3342/3609173322_7af336002d_b.jpg

Made up a front driveshaft sing Trail gears long spline kit and 2.5" schedule 40 pipe. I also clearnce this cv to optimize angle.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3383/3608454603_da99a47dd7_b.jpg

Made up a rear crossmember for the shocks to be mounted in the /\ format.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3370/3608470045_ce8e24453d_b.jpg

Starting to look like a truck again. Had to make some room for the front tires since I pushed the front axle forward an additional inch from the Trail gear SAS kit.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3301/3609281576_cc94b372e6_b.jpg

Lots of room now after I cut that fender bracket off
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3354/3608459279_abec99b3d1_b.jpg

The new rear axle had a disc brake conversion and I eliminated the LSPV form the rear. I decided to mount a Summit proportioning valve in a handy spot for easy adjustments

I pulled the old rusty oil pan off to replace it with a nice one I had and found pieces of the timing cain guides. So I tore into the engine to find brand new looking guides. i was a little upset since I had the new metal backed ones sitting there. Oh well at least i got to clean up the engine a little and add some security. Those are LC engineering headers.

From here I was in high gear and forgot to take pictures but this is how it has ended.
I do have a full cage to install and will include those pics at a later date.

The truck is using trail gear 4" springs up front and 5"springs in the rear. I did remove one leaf from each pack to lower it a little.
This was my first build like this. I'm sure there are things that are going to need changed. For the most part the first run at the outback adventure went flawless. I need to get some good poser shots, but for know this is what I got.

mcclunet
09-22-2009, 11:03 PM
Yep the Zuki is almost done lol. Well I think she will be ready for the last ride.. i got a lot to do for next year but I think she will do just fine for one ride anyhow. I put 33'x12.5 on it and am working on a cage.. it is not as pretty as yours or skippies but is will hold. I got around 500 in it so far and less than a week to finish, it could be a time test again. But I have taken it places that the red runner struggles at home with little problems so i think the little tank will be fine. hope to see you friday.

bear9820
09-23-2009, 10:39 AM
:019: What do you mean my red runner struggles? I think the red runner will run circles around that samari. Everyone that Knows the red runner was pretty impressed with it... U havent had it out on six points trails at all... So when the breaking gets tough... U can sit...

mcclunet
09-27-2009, 11:01 PM
well john you missed one hell of a good ride. hope some ppl got pics of the sammi to post. hope to ride it with you next year. cant wait to see what you are doing with the runner.

Fourx4sr4me
09-28-2009, 08:37 PM
Had a lot of crap happen that kept me from getting it done for this weekend. I will get some pics up real soon.

Do you guys have a trailer to transport the gray runner? If not maybe we can plan a trip to the offroad park on a non event weekend!!! Are you or skip members yet?

mcclunet
09-29-2009, 03:04 AM
No we dont have a trailer yet. it sucks big time, we had to drive all three this time lol. We are planing on getting a membership soon or sometime this spring. I want to do a lot to with the sammi, I may just start building a rig of my own, as long as it is ready for next year. But if you want to do something as a privet ride i am sure skip would be up for it sometime. I need a clutch and cable for the sammi before it go back out with it. But if we get something setup i am sure I can have the sammi ready. that and the red runner needs a bit done.. we think it may have wiring issues. it cooked an alt changed it out, still the light is on... this will be the 3rd one we put on it as far as i am aware. So i think we may be looking for a harness for under the hood soon. bummer

Hows it goin john? It was a good messy weekend with no major carnage. Ill have to get some pics up tomorrow after my sis brings her camera over.
Red runner did as good as usually untill berta went puddle juppin n cooked the alt. I got it changed again tonite and runnin for now.
My runner went well exept when i got hung up between a couple trees. them trails are a bit tite or my rig is bit big. Its gettin the knife over winter
The sami looked like a blast to run untill the clutch got hot.

Im plannin on gettin memberships asap so we can plan a trip in a month or so if you n some others are up for it.

Now i wanna SAS the red runner if Berta buys some 37's next spring. N all our runners need bobbed a foot or so. Maybe i just wanna chop something up

9 Months.... But i did everything at the same time. If you get everything ready you could do it in a weekend easily.

Going good. Should have mine back together soon. I took 8" out of the back of mine and it worked out perfect. I will post some pics soon. I ran into lots of problems with other shit while doing this little project. Probaly the worst was my air compressor blowing up and haveing to rebuild it before i could work on the truck again.

Well after the last outback adventure and running the snake trail I decided it was time to shorten things up.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2689/4017864101_3b50557b93_b.jpg

I decided to remove eight inches since that was all I could remove from the rear bumper before getting in the curves.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2706/4017866213_b4199e7ccd_b.jpg
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2657/4017867041_ce805082d0_b.jpg
I must of measured at least a dozen times before making the first cut.
I also had to remove about 4" of frame
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2673/4018629358_c7eef9933a_b.jpg

Cut off the old body mounts and moved them to directly support the rear of the roll cage
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2519/4017872255_abd26080a9_b.jpg

Ran into a few issues with this project: First I got the Flu for about a week and then my compressor shit the bed.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3454/4017869763_28af76075e_b.jpg

Got parts for the compressor and got back to work getting things welded back together and getting some body work done.

Got the back bumper sectioned and sleeved back together
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3511/4017873603_15e272f807_b.jpg

Made new brackets to clear the shackles and reinforced the sides some
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2498/4017876509_459bcea7db_b.jpg
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2573/4018644988_4d10788614_b.jpg
Decided to make a mount for my highlift

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2586/4018646510_88e4a2bf8d_b.jpg

Since I carry a fullsize spare in the bed I had to remove the glass from the gate to allow the tire to fit inside when closed. I had to get a little fancy with the gate release.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3514/4018640322_4cc673b53a_b.jpg

Well here is the finished product. Alot of work for just eight inches but anymore and I would of lost to much storage space. As you can see the Co2 just barely fits behind the cage and the biggest spare i will me able to carry is a 39". I alos added one more bar to protect my rear lights
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2567/4017892441_7ba628399e_b.jpg

You can see the notches needed in the tailgate in order for it to open and close properly.

Nothing in the rear. I played around with a few things up front and got more up travel to take adavantage of the empty space that was left in the wheel wells.

Cage was built by 4xinnovations. I just welded it in and made a few modifications to work better for me.

Well, I 've been busy running wire and rebuilding the top end of the 22re.

I decided to install a in cab winch control here is the before
http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k190/fourx4sr4me/P1010629.jpg

and a nice clean fit after
http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k190/fourx4sr4me/P1010640.jpg

These switches are made by carlington and match the color scheme real nice. Here they are all lit up
http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k190/fourx4sr4me/P1010636.jpg

I finally got my Cb installed along with aux light, rock lights and a fan shut off. Here is the before

http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k190/fourx4sr4me/P1010630.jpg

And here is the after
http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k190/fourx4sr4me/P1010656.jpg

I installed some LED oval reverse lights here is the before
http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k190/fourx4sr4me/P1010624-1.jpg

These are actually really bright on a dark trail and work really good. I also replaced the original incadescent bulbs with LEDs

http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k190/fourx4sr4me/P1010628-1.jpg

Here is a cargo carrier I whipped up to haul all my crap camping.
http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k190/fourx4sr4me/P1010672.jpg

I built up the top ened of the motor since My head gasket finally pooped the bed. I went with an engnbldr RV head with oversized valves and a torkr cam. No more bogging when hitting the gas in the woods. I was actually running 4 high for once.

You will have to wait to see the intereior lights and rock lights I have not taken those pics yet

Your toyota makes me feel bad about myself, you take more care and pay more attention to detail putting reverse lights in and a cb radio than I have on my entire rig. Amazing work.
