i am wantting to convert an A/C compressor to an air compressor. i have a compressor off a 89 chevy 350 and one off a mid 60 dodge. will either of these work? if not what kind do i need and how to convert it ?

will i need a holding tank for the air ? or will the compressor be good on its own?

There's a lot of info on the net about DIY onboard air systems. If one of your compressors are the piston type york compressors, those are the preferred ones. Others can be used but may need an in line oiling system.

Here look at this, it lists almost everything you need to make a onboard air compressor I know I missed acouple things when I made the instructable. So if you have any questions ask. If its a 60's dodge it may be a R2 compressor and the 80's compressor is most likely a sanden type both can be made into a compressor just one will have a longer time between oilings.

monday i am goin to junk yard .... gonna see it they have any volvo's layin around ... gettin a york.

now i am debaitin between mounting it to the motor (chevy 350) or mount it under or in cab air tank will be behind cab (truggy) and run it on an electric motor. this way its a simple on /off toggle plus i can keep the plumbing short.

You would need a winch motor to run a York so aleast 150+ amp draw. Best bet is the engine mount/belt drive.

You will have to look a while to get a york now, they are like chickens teeth. Most of the cars that had Yorks in them where crushed.

I got my 210 york off of ebay for abut $100 . I mounted mine above the water pump on an angle , and used a double groove pulley from summit. I'll try to post some pics soon once I put them on my photobucket

We took a york from an early wagoneer and put it on a late cj. Insane....60 psi at idle, 90 psi at 1000 rpm. Who needs a tank with air like that. Next conversion was an HEI and I can't begin to tell you what a difference that has made.
