when you pulled the axle shaft out you let it fall and tear the inside axle seal

That or the diff was a little over full and when you pulled the axels out the fluid spilled over the seal. I would clean it up and give it a day or two see if it is still leaking. It's worth a shot. If it does need axel seals when you do them put in some outer axel seals too.

that sucks.....you could always do like I did... just keep adding oil and try to stay out of deep water... I have been doing this for almost a year now... and when you are leaning hard to that side it like to run out...

i just contacted a mechanic to fix it. i figure its just easier in the long run instead of trying to nurse the situation. i'll let you guys know what they he is going to estimate the cost!

1. i don't have a garage or anything to work on it at. I've been using my buddies garage to do my work. he is outta town for the next week , so that is why i am having a garage do it. gotta give me some credit, i have put my time under this damn thing lol, i've changed front U-Joints, Leaf Springs, Exhaust from Cat back, and a bunch of other meticulous things. i've saved myself a ton of money getting this yj back up and going. SOO yes

oh and p.s.

the mechanic didn't do it for me... he said that you have to pull the differental out and change them through that direction....

Does your 4x4 still work fine?

Does your 4x4 still work fine?

Doesn't affect how the 4wd works unless you plain run out of oil or get massive amounts of water in it without changing it soon.

yeah inner axle seals are a pita without pulling the diff. As far as I know there isn't a stop leak for axles. I'd suggest getting someone on here to help you change it. Fix it right or fix it again

okay thanks for the info about sealant.... would these solve my problem then? instead of going inside the axle to change the inner seals? or would my entire axle just eventually get filled with gear lube

To a degree. They do work, ran them on one of my YJ's in the past. And they are GREAT for keeping crud out of the axle tubes (Crud which is normally what tears diff seals up) However they are no replacement for good inner seals (You'll still see some seepage), some stock shafts will not work with them, and you'll need to clean up your tubes then silicone the surface due to most axle tubes having poor metal condition.

or would my entire axle just eventually get filled with gear lube

Yes it would, but thats not a big deal unless you don't clean said tubes first.

i said screw it on those. i just decided to do what Cesco Recommended... to just keep adding oil. its slowed down the leak to very minimal.
