i currently have a 97 TJ with the 4.0L straight six. from what i've been told i have the small dana gearing. not very sure. my buddy has a 98 TJ with the 4-cylinder and it seems that things he can go over in 4 hi takes me 4 low. i am thinking of upgrading my gearing or should i get a front and rear locker? money, of course, is an issue.
what should i do?

How is his rig different from yours beyond the engine? Transmission? Tires? Lockers? Driving ability/experience?

So many factors can come into play that I would just get more seat time under your belt before dumping a bunch of money into your rig.

That said, I'm always in 4LO when I'm wheeling (unless I'm in 2wd on a main access road).

If I am not mistaken (and the could VERY much be the case) the 4-bangers came with a D35 with a 4:10 gear ratio whereas the 6-cyls came with a D35 (mostly) with a 3:07 ratio.

Can someone confirm?

Anyway, that would explain it ... I have a 4-cyl and I can do 75-80 on the highway no problem (that is as long as my tires a balanced lest I death wobble off the road).

Only time a 4 cyl jeep should be in 4 high is on snow covered roads (& even then you might consider 4 low :040:)

Mine has 3.73 stock, but also, the Unlimiteds have the D44.

Yeah ... looks like the changes the stock ratios over the years. For the '97 I6 it was 3.07 ... I couldn't imagine my I4 with the 3.07.
