i am thinking, for xj tube fenders, using a piece of plate that bolts on over the lower fender like body protection for tj's, has a larger wheel opening so that the fender can be trimmed for tire clearance and then a tube flare off of it sized accordingly for tire coverage... i will have to mock something up on one of my parts xj's to see how the logistics factor in as to how the plate would need to be bent to fit the contour of the xj body.

any other ideas?

Ive seen that thread, he used thor 4x4 rear corner guards for xj and added tube and a flair, and he used another companies front armor and added tube, he had a ton of money tied up in em, guaranteed if you make your own plates it would be a shit ton cheaper.

how i would lay out the fender cut line.

http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o22/pabelt/fender.jpg?t=1254047004
the red is a rock rail/rocker guard, the green is the plate on hte lower bit of the fender to mount the blue tube fender to for a solid base

the black is the tube fender, the blue is the stock sheet metal, the red is some 16 gage baking the stock sheet metal, and the yellow is plate that sandwiches the 16 ga and teh stock sheet metal with teh tube fenders mounting plate.

if any of this is hard to understand, i have been up since 8 am yesterday, so im having a hard time understanding it myself.

Cut fender. Run tube from bumper to slider that hugs the body. Run a second hoop off the first where you want your coverage. Skin. Done.

I would not run them off of skins. I think if you hit them hard enough they would still push the body in pretty bad. They look nice though.

Heres (http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f11/xj-bolt-tube-fenders-432269/) the thread from Jeepforum.

Heres some pics from the thread.

i agree /\ and for anyone that doesnt want their fenders permanently tied into the sliders, you can add tube connectors.

mykal, that is pretty much what i had in mind, thanks for the pics! xj's are tough since theres really not many solid places to mount anything... although something like that would wthstand a rub better than regular fenders and distribute the weight evenly over the panel. for a truly strong design, yes tying it in to a solid bumper and rub rails would be the absolute best.

yes it would be the best, but like i said, it would be a pain if you ever had to remove a front fender or a rock rail or something, that is why you'd need some type of connector like this....... http://shop.jeeptubes.com/product.sc?productId=57&categoryId=10

Justin, that sounds like a good idea. That orange xj in the pics is a pretty good example of what everybody wants. Me included. I'm still hoarding away my pennies from the wife :)

Ralph, those are awesome as far as asthetics go, so I'm not knocking them at all. That said, I can't see those lasting very long on tough trails, if that's what that person does. I only say that because there's not much support other than the sheet metal, from what I can tell.

Nice work though.

the front fenders were braced inside on the opposite side of the new sheet metal was welded. basically i cut small pieces of 1x1 angle iron and welded it from the unibody to the factory fender. the rears were welded almost directly to the inside fender wells. they are strong, and he fit 34" swampers with 4" of lift.

That's why I said "from what I can tell" :003:

Good job, they do look good!

I like the idea. That red xj looks sweet with them. You ought to be able to sell the heck out of them with all the XJ's round here. Espec the rusted ones.

If you make a few sets and they turn out okay, id be on that like white on rice when spring rolls around haha. Had mine out yesterday bangin my fenders off trees and shit, all i did was gouge the flairs, mangle my CB antenna mount and crumple my bumper end cap, could have been much worse. These flairs would have been awesome could have let it go into the trees no problem. I LIKE THE IDEA OF EM!
