Finally found a yota, and it kind of looks like the truck from the back to the future movie! :042: It's an 85 SR5, 22r non efi, 5 speed, and even came with a roll/light bar from a dakota. It's got some rust, frame has one hole about the size of a quarter. The engine runs, but it's got a dead battery, and it's leaking oil somewhere. Needs some brake work, no brakes at the moment.

There sits a combined 433,000 miles.

Damn it! Knew I shouldn't have installed it after that last shot...

That's cool, this one was $650, and I'm liking the retro graphics. Just need a few more KC lights and I'll be rollin' in style. :icon_eyes:

Biff's gonna have to do a hell of a lot of body work before the wax. :081:

Plan right now is to just read up on yotas and learn, then come up with a build plan. But, by next summer I hope to have it in the shop and with at least 36's. Still not sure if I want to try and patch it together enough to get on the road, to drive it stock for a while until then. :102:

whats the manufacture date? I beliebe if it was made after 8-84 then it is actueally an 85.

It was made in 8 of 83.

btw, was out digging around behind the back seat and I found a new wiper blade, phillips screwdriver, and a quarter, talk about a deal!! :042:

Got part of the brakes sorted out, had to get a reman caliper and new rotor. Old caliper was seized and the rotor wore through the pad backer and into the pistons. Brakes work now, but still need some air bled out.

There was some wheel spacers on the thing, and there was only a couple threads holding on each lug nut, 3/6 were stripped. I ditched the spacers but had to bash the snot the weights to clear the tie rod ends.

There is some good stuff there! Can't hang there too much though, might end up putting in 60's and making a tube bed. :042:

Here's a tentative build plan:

- 63" chevy springs in rear
- rear springs up front, custom pack
- new spring mounts, figure that out later
- try to keep things relatively low, but not get too crazy fender trimming
- try to keep bed full length
- dual t-cases, stock gear sets
- stock 22r or 22re if I find one
- beefed up stock axles
- 5.29 gears
- any low buck strength mods
- 36" or 37" tires
- lunch box lockers front/rear
- redo front steering

This will start after winter, for now I need to get it on the road. I picked up a cheap gran damn for a winter beater but after getting the engine and brakes all fixed up I found the rear axle/swingarm is rotted out at the bushings. :009: So it's going to need a bit more work before it hits the road.

Nice project truck! Give me a call if you need any parts, I'm up to 11 Yotas now LOL.

Take a look at Trail-gear.com for springs over the 63's and rears up front. I can get them for less $$$ than you think and they hold up better IMO.

36"+ are awesome on a Yota but makes it pretty big, keep in mind that 33 TSLs give you the same clearance as a full size on 36-38s.

Look @ Trail-gear Hi-steer for steering correction and Aussie for lockers. I get a pretty good deal from Aussie as well.

5.29's are a great choice, but if you do 33's and dual cases they can wait if they have to.

Your oil leak is the front crank seal. Get one from Toyota and a quick sleeve from NAPA if needed.

If it runs good now, don't get too hung up on doing an engine swap, or EFI conversion right away. Toyota carbs are some of the best for wheeling, till you NEED to swap. Your '83 build date means you should have an early 22R. These engines had a better timing chain design than the later engines and don't require upgraded parts.
Remember lack of power and stout axles are what make Yota's live in stock form.

Try to find some stock Yota front hubs, the warn replacements suck compared to stock.

IMO I'd start here:

Get it running and driving soundly.
3" trail-gear lift and crossover steering.
33" Original TSL Swampers (as tall as some 35's)
Aussie lockers in both ends.
4.7 TG crawler gear set.(When you go to duals later, you will already have them bought and installed).I think they are on sale right now for close to $200 my cost.

Thanks for the advice. I'm sure the build plan will change many times before any work gets done, I'm always tweaking things. :042: I was definitely going to go with aussie lockers for this truck, I put a lock right in the jeep and it's been fine but I want to give the aussies a shot.

I want to buy a whole extra driveline for this truck, that way I can work on the axles and stuff before taking the truck off the road. Then, I'll have spares too.

I popped the valve cover and to my surprise the chain guides look to be in real good shape, didn't know the short 22rs didn't have as much of a problem. I've cleaned the carb, new plugs, filters, and the basic stuff. She fires right up and runs good, shifts smooth.

Only problems now are with the brakes. After talking to fourx4rsrme I realized why I couldn't figure out the LSPV thing, half of it is gone! The other half is seized up. In the mean time I broke 3 more brake lines and stripped the bleeders off the wheel cylinders... So I broke down and bought a double flaring tool and 25' of brake line to get started.

Here's the missing link,

you could goto summit and just get a cheap valve to adjust the rear to front ratio

If you want to keep the LSPV for now. I have a spare you can have. As for tire sizes go with 35"s for now until you build the front end up. Do more cutting than lifting. If you buy springs from trail gear go with the 3" ones. Don't go any bigger.

I might have to take you up on that John, don't know if I can get mine un seized. Was going to toss a hose clamp on it so I can adjust it. Summit valves are like 40 bucks, probably only do that as a last resort. Still a lot cheaper than oem stuff though.

I plan on driving the truck as is up through the summer, maybe grab a set of cheap 33's or 35's to wheel with. Probably do a little wheeling with it before she gets surgery, will need frame reinforcing and stuff like that, so it will be out of service for a while. Having parts to mod while the truck is still on the road should minimize down time.

I replaced some brake lines today, and just eliminated the LSPV from the system. I plugged the return line and just ran the pressured line straight to the back. The rear brakes work now, but even driving on grass I have a tough time getting them to lock up? Fronts lock up no problem, so it seems everything is working OK with out the LSPV. Also put in a few sheet metal screws to hold my floor panels together. :048:

Picked up a tire changer from harbor freight for 40 bucks last week, used it to swap some new tars. Couldn't find any cheap 31's or 33's so I had to settle for two different 235/75 tires I had lying around the barn. Hit the wheels with some steel wool and cheap paint to make it look more like marty's truck. :042:

You guys will like this one. Few weeks back my mom's truck (2008 ram) wouldn't pass inspection because of a bad tie rod end, at only 30,000 miles. WTF is that about? Our '96 dodge has over 217,000 on the original TRE's and ball joints. :042: Anyways, it's under warranty and was at the the dealer, so I had to drive down there. Prior to this, I had been working on the yota as I found it had no advance in the ignition. After that ordeal I had it running decent again, but had the timing bumped a little too much advanced, it started getting hot driving up the last big hill by the dealership. So, I come rolling on into the dealer, taking the only open spot right in front of the show room. Truck no sooner stops and I pop the hood and hop out with a 12mm wrench and timing light in hand. Well, the sales guys must have thought they were getting an ultra motivated buyer there, I swear the one guy must have sprinted out the door to come over to see if he could help me. :043: After he found out I wasn't planning on buying anything new he wasn't so chatty, I told him the old yota is good for another couple hundred thousand miles.

i hate pushy car salesmen.... before i bought the Pathfinder, i told one salesman i was looking for an 08 or newer Grand Cherokee with the 4.7. He proceeded to try to sell my the 07 with the v6 he had on the lot. I said no... he kept it up saying it's a good deal..... his boss (owner) then saw me and since he's my customer here at work, told the salesman to back off. i hate driving onto a car lot anymore.

oh and nice truck BTW.!!

Well, thought I was through with the over heating problems. Only time the gauge ever moved above its normal operating temp. was after I had messed with the timing. Since that I've driven about 600 miles, many of which were pretty hard on the truck, and it never flinched. Then the other day while going fishing and cruising down 422 I notice it's almost in the red. It was hot that day, but I'd driven it in weather like that before. Even with the heater on full blast, it would still get hot on the up hills. Idle and low speed driving it would be alright.

Starting getting paranoid about the HG again, everybody keeps telling me it's going to go. :120: No smoke out the exhaust, no loss of coolant, oil clear. Checked the plugs, all look identical, although they look a bit lean to me? But I'm more familiar with tuning 2 strokes by reading the plugs. All white electrode insulator with a splotch of brown/orange on one side.

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b211/toocheaptosmoke/0724001612x.jpg

Finally did a comp. test, cranked for 5 compression cycles each.
1 = 150
2=110
3=145
4=150
Put a few drops of oil into #2 and the comp. went to 155, so I'm thinking that rules out HG? Not that worried if it's just rings, wanna see how long she'll run being all original.

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b211/toocheaptosmoke/0724001517x.jpg

Decided to change the thermostat before anything else, looks like it hadn't been done for at least a decade. It was a 195 that was added in, so I put a 180 in which I think what was in there originally? Of course one of the bolts had to break, lost an hour of my life getting it extracted.

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b211/toocheaptosmoke/0724001635x.jpg

Dug through the bolt bin for a while but couldn't find the right size metric bolt, ended up finding a used bolt, came with a few extra parts though... :biggrin:

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b211/toocheaptosmoke/0726001746bx.jpg

After replacing the thermostat the temp. gauge sits a little lower than it used to. (would hope so) Drove it 140 miles the other day and never had it get as hot as it did before. Temp does occasionally rise from when the thermostat opens to where it used to run with the 195 on long hills. Hope it actually was the thermostat, and not just the lower 180 masking the problem.

Goodwill produces again, scored an original soundtrack cassette to match the truck. :045: Too bad the cassette deck doesn't work...
