http://www.hrja.org/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif these are going to be complete fenders and tied into the frame, not much to show yet. i was going to hi line it, but i dont want to chop up a good cj hood and i think i will have some good clearance without it even if i go to 39"s and lower it an inch

horny bro!!! its funny you posted them tying into the frame cuz i was layin in bed last night thinking that that would be better than tying them into the grille...

it is very solid being attatched to the frame.... my body is rigid mount tho, otherwise i would have had to attach the fenders with a body puck.

anyway, i finished the tube work for the drivers side tonight.... i am not sure i like them. :retard: i am gonna deliberate for a day or two before i fully weld the outters on and cover them with sheet metal... i angled them in as the go back towards the body to keep them from looking extremely large, yet still cover the tire. i do really like the inner fenders so far, so they will definitely stay.

i have done a few things to give them a very unique design so that they stand out from all of the others. i really am not a tube fender fan, but i dont want to smash up another set of cj fenders. so this is more of a function over form deal that i have tried to add a little of my personal taste so that i dont dislike them.

heres pics from tonight.

the more i look at them, the more i like em, is the angle the fenders are pulled back at teh same as the angle of how the hood is cut?

Dude you will love them once there done. It's much nicer to be able
to rub/brush/smash up against trees and not hear a crunching sound. I don't know how I delt without mine.

I think it looks great. The only area that *might* need a little adjustment is at the rear portion. Maybe less of a steep angle coming out from the fender?

I'm not familiar with "jeep" tube fenders enough to make real suggestions though. I do know the less tire coverage, the meaner the look. IMO.

That suggestion is a little over the top though. The things should take a beating regardless and they look good. What else is there.

I think that adding a tube "flare" to a tube fender REALLY helps out with keeping them from looking like massive wings.

Just a small 3-4" kickdown at the edge, that way the tire will still tilt inside the "flare" when flexing.

Something to this effect (the front fenders, not the rear);

I have a question for you, How often do you drive it on the road? I like the fact that you tied them into the frame, now you can make a small cage around the engine to help protect it. I have been thinking of a way to have a cage around my engine. I am not trowing a dig here by any means, I don't care for tube fenders because it makes it looks like an 80's lift and the tires do not fill in the fenders. the pic of the jeep that gonecheenin posted looks kinda cool. justin, nice tube bending and fitting by the way!!

brian, it doesnt get driven on the road much at all, i didnt get it inspected this year, but i want to keep the option open. like i said before, i am not a fan either, but i also hate the flares i had on it to keep it legal and i dont want to smash up another set of cj fenders. so, these are the result.... theyre kinda growin on me, i guess ill have to finsh weld and wrap em in sheet.

Looking good man, I like em. Y'all wanna see wings look at the new flat pannel zenon flares on a JK haha. Look like bat wings, espec with stock wheels. I like them on the TJ's but the jk's look really hokey.

I know that I did the "try to keep it street leagal" for years. all the more that I did run it on the road and I would trailer it everywhere for a trial ride no matter how close it was for me. looking back on it now, I wished I would have taken the time and money to try to do keep it on the road and put it towards a stronger drive train and suspension.

CESCO

I would prob do the same thing for fenders, just because of the strength of them. do a similar thing in the rear and tie them into yours rock rails and you should be able to hit the trees/rocks pretty hard with showing any damage to the body.

I got what your saying, but then again in PA alot of us have local trails which require jumping a couple roads to go from one to the other.

In those cases, having something close to street legal is def a benefit.

well, they grew on me, so i finished the tube work and now i am just waiting on sheet metal tools to get here. i ordered some electric shears, a nibbler, and a flanging/spotweld punch tool. http://www.hrja.org/forums/images/smilies/applaudit.gif when it all gets here, i will make the inner fenders and finish them.

heres some tube fitment pics of the support piece i added.

Looks good so far. It was probably a PITA to make the inner fender. Sheet metal doesn't get along with me. I give those projects to my dad.

Do you get that much stuff on the engine or are you doing the inner fender for looks?

Edit: Duh! You had fenders before. I don't get very much dirt or mud on the engine of the Mutt or truggy with no fender FWIW.

justin'sbig7

mainly trying to keep it as streetable as possible. plus it keeps crap out of the engine bay... and to see how hard it is and if i can do it

Looking for something like the MORE's for my YJ. Im dropping down to RE 1.5" Leafs and scored a good deal on a set of 16" Travel Eldelbrock Remote Ressies. Just need them bent up, i can weld them on.

Dammit i need to just man up and buy a bender.

i have wide axles on the jeep and dont really need too much of an inner fender.... i can still bolt stuff to it, but it makes more room for things in the engine bay. i have a few coolers and a separate filter for my hydro steering, so with the v8 it is fairly cramped when adding things in. the OBA was a tight fit when mounted to the chevy, now it has some more room, and i wasnt able to put the welder on it before, but now it looks like i can.... possibly a second battery as well.

Brandon, something I just thought about for turn signals...might be too late.

I know you have gussets between the top tube and your grill. What if you drilled holes in the gussets and put the signals in there? Not sure if they're big enough to fit a LED signal, but IMO it'd be the cleanest way to incorporate turn signals into them.

thought about it...im gonna do the front signals in the grill and the side signals in a small tab on the side

limegreentj
12-27-2009, 07:33 PM
i thought about that too...but then i went ahead and skinned them and it gave me little room to work with...there is a dude on JF that did the led in the tube...it looks good

tjblair
12-27-2009, 07:43 PM
I believe that overkill eng does something like that too. My only question would be, once you cut the tube to recess them in how are you going to seal the tube back up. Unless you cut a pretty big hole it is going to betough to get in there to seal it.

limegreentj
12-27-2009, 08:33 PM
exactly why i didnt do it...you could silicone it...but it would be a serious pain in the nards

This is zactly what I did to mine.

Overkill was the ones I was thinking about
http://www.overkilleng.com/overkillengineering/TJFC4L.htm
their's are boxed inside the tube. I don't know how they do it. It would be tough to get in there to weld. But you will have to seal it somehow.

all done, the paint turned out kinda crappy and i learned that i have a lot to learn about bondo as i tried to smooth in theedge of the sheet metal to the tube, but they turned out nice. i like 'em
