I want to build a tire carrier like 95yj40's http://www.pgh-offroad.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10024&highlight=tire+carrier

Im wondering what size steel to use I know 2x2 but how thick it will be supporting a 35 on a steel rim. I would also like to make a place to hold a 5 gallon gas can. Any thoughts? My plan is to mount it on my existing step bumper which is pretty beefy from factory.

1/8 inch is plenty thick... the flat sides of the 2x2 is 1/8 inch and the corners work out to be about 3/16.

We got that stuff from Field chrest(sp)steel in carnegie. Cheapest place around for steel that I have found. I built one similiar for a friends yj with a 5 gal. jerry can mount intregated into it. So far it has held up well. He is on the board but hasn't been around for awhile. Think he is selling the jeep and buying a VW.

when I built mine the horizontal and vertical pcs were 1/4" wall and the angled supports were 1/8" wall.

Make sure your crossmember can handle the added weight and constant tugging that a couple hundered pounds of steel and tire will put on it. Tie into the frame if you can.

For the carrier itself, we've used 3/16th's in the past for the bigger ones with good success, but 1/8" is pleanty for the truss portion, since the strength is in the geometry (triangles), not the material.
