I figure I'd post up what I made to give other people ideas. This was made to hold the tire and take some abuse without smashing the tailgate or tub. The lower mounts are welded to the top of the bumper and uses standard control arm bushings with the sleeve and 9/16" bolts. The upper mounts are a C's bolted to the tub with four cut down upper control arm bushings, no sleeve and 5/8" pins. In the center is a long bolt to tighten the tire against the frame and the weight is supported by the big center tubes.

Pull the upper pins and it folds down and the tailgate clears the tire. If you get in and out of the tailgate a lot it might be a pain but it's definitely strong with minimal working parts to break.

If I did it again I would move the two vertical legs closer together for the tire to have more even pressure on the frame. It's fine now, just my preference. That's a 36" bias TSL in there now BTW, probably could fit 37" or 38" maybe. Tried to follow the KISS principle for the whole thing as much as possible.

very nice! i'd bend up a piece of flat stock for the top part that attaches to the tub to spread out the weight a little

Thanks. Yeah, forgot to mention that it has full steel corners that are painted to match the jeep. A stock tub would need some major support for this same setup or it would screw the tub all up.

lol i couldnt even tell it has full steel corners...looks good though man! i thought about doing this to mine, but i think i'd rather have a swing out, it'd be a little easier, but i do like the look of the rear stinger

Pictures of it folded down someone wanted to see. A round piece of plywood and it would make a nice table for lunch on the trail.:042:

The only thing id like to see it do would be fold all the way to the ground. Thats a whole lot of pressure hanging off the back of the jeep. I know when i swing mine open it is alot of pressure and its not as far as that off the body.

Other than that, awesome. If i didnt run Jerry Cans and a Hi-Lift out back thats exactly what id run.

yeah but that pressure is only on the bumper, not the tub, so it shouldnt hurt it

Mine is on the bumper as well, and i have my bumper supported by the rear sub-frame, 2 bolts underneath to the frame, and 2 brackets going up under the tub to the frame, and it will still move with stress. Now i do have alot of weight hanging on mine, dont get me wrong, but i would be worried about having it just hanging there without the bumper atleast being tied in on the top to the frame somewhere. Or the tire being able to touch the ground.

The tire would need to be at least 6" higher in order for it to not hit the bumper to fold down to the ground. The tire being higher looks bad IMO and blocks what little view there is out back. Also the brackets on the bumper would need to stick farther out the rear which would look weird when the carrier isn't on there.

Both are sacrifices for looks and being strong, functional and as low as possible when upright. It does hold 180 pounds jumping on the end of the tire when folded down without the bumper flexing so I think it will be fine.

I like this idea. Seems to be multi functional. If the tire were off, the hoop could be used as a john if need be. The table idea seem cool, though it may be somewhat cramped with the upper links in the way. My only idea for improvment would be a T bar to secure the tire. If the center bolt were welded in place and a piece of tubing were used to center the hub, it would make it easier to change a flat than wrenching the bolts ( looked like 3 holding tire on) on the inside or the rim

i think i am gonna do something like this.... i think i want mine to go all the way to the ground so that i can stand on it like a ladder to get shit out of the back of the jeep though lol!
