you could also try to find a D44 to put in there....97-06'll bolt right in

8.8 is easier to find and I hope cheaper I also want to change to 4 10 gears

if you change to the 4.10s in the back, find a 4 banger tj and swap axles with it, almost all 4 bangers came with 4.10s. then just swap all the good stuff from your front axle over to the new one and sell the old one off. if you decide to do that, let me know, i may be interested in the 1 piece axle shafts

8.8 is a great swap and well worth doing.

a zj axle is not a bolt in to a tj, they are also an aluminum housing D44, not as good as the cast d44. do the 8.8 swap, they are a lot easier to find and cheaper. if you have some fab skills it wont be too complicated either.

i am also a big fan of a selectable locker. especially for the front.

Do the 8.8. They are stronger than the 44 and have factory disks.

Their wider with a different bolt pattern I know that. Doesn't mean you couldn't get it in there though!

JK 44's are 61.9" from wheel mounting surface
Ford 8.8 is 59.75" from wheel mounting surface
Dana 35 is 60.5" from wheel mounting surface

The JK 44's aren't that much wider than your 35 was, BUT they are also a 5 on 5 bolt pattern. So you would either have to get a 2 new wheels for the rear end (makes for a PITA for rotating tires/spares/etc), or get adapters. With adapters, they would like add another ~1"onto that track width.

The easiest swap (with the least amount of BS) would be the 8.8. Its stupid strong and can be found at pretty much any junkyard with the amount of explorers traded in for cash for clunkers. I know Millerstown has at least 20 explorers with the 8.8.

JK axles are 65" WMS to WMS. The 61.9 is track width.

WORD.

Why do you think I SERIOUSLY considered them before I found the 1-tons?
The price has skyrocketed on the JK44's from when they were first released from mopar. Almost into 1-ton range again you sleeve the front....

That was why I decided to skip 'em and go with the tons.

I started my 8.8 swap what did i get my self into. Going cheap and using the stock mounts what a pain cutting them off the old rear end. Might take me alittle bit cause of work but a good learning experience. try to get some pics and updates as work goes any hints would be great if any one has done 1 one of these.

I probably would have used some pre-made mounts to save you the time and work of cutting them off then making them fit the larger 8.8 tubes.

If you have some questions you can call me.
you could pm me and I 'll send you my number.

they wanted $400 and i just could not justify the money . Was looking at it today and i might just make some of the mounts my self wife is already having a heart attack about $ on changing the front over to 4.10s and a locker. she says i dont need them i have a offroad jeep already she just understand. o well i like a good challenge.

$155 by my count, plus shipping. Make some shock tabs and you are set:D just make sure to order them with the correct axel tube diameter.

Those aftermarket mounts will take more abuse than the stock ones. Well worth the extra coin if you ask me. I have ripped a stock mount off my front axle. The aftermarket ones in the rear have held up very well so far. Did you find a 8.8 with the disc brakes? They are the way to go.

If you went the disc route you have to either swap proportioning valves or take the O-ring out of your stock valve you have in the jeep now. I choose to remove the O-ring cuz I didn't grab the valve out of the donor. The Diff covers on the 8.8's are VERY thin, you may want to consider building a cover or getting an aftermarket cover if the jeep is going to be off-road at all. You can use E-brake cables off a grand cherokee( I think) to hook the e-brakes up on your new axle. No modification will be needed here or you can fab little metal tabs to connect your stock cables to the 8.8 brakes.

except they have thin tubes. they make sleeves for JK axle tubes!

i also agree that 4 cyl MANUAL TJ's will have 4.10's. auto's will have 3.73's. Supposedly the newer 4 cyl auto's with the 4 speed overdrive trans have factory 4.56's!

They do, but they're also rare as hens' teeth.

just got some time to work on it the past few days only got a couple of pics with my phone don't show much but alittle. Had to use the original upper mounts but no big deal and made things easier. Used new lower mounts and spring buckets. I might have the pinion angle off by a couple of degrees but i think it will be ok. everything bolted in nicely need to do some brake line work and get the driveshaft adapter. then i should be done. I also sandblasted the rearend and painted it .

Got the ebrake cable on cut the old return spring off and used the ford springs from the explorer made some brackets to hook the ends on . Copied the brackets from what I have seen on the internet i hope they work . Hoping to finish tomorrow as long as i can get the drive shaft adapter.

I just finished. i pulled a o ring out of the portioning valve cause of switch to the rear disc brakes and seemed to stop fine, will need to ck more when the rust gets off the rooters from sitting. definity need a sye now bad viberations in the drive shaft, I think cause of the off center 8.8. So far im happy with the swap just need to get the front swapped to 4.10 gears so i can really ck it out.I also needed to buy a diffrent rear universal to adapt to the 8.8 .
