Ive read a few places about thise Select Trac not being good for 4 wheeling, True or false? Whats the difference other then it has the option to drive in snow better from what I gather? I mean 4 low still be the same? Everytime Im in the woods I have it in four low anyway so thats all that matters to me!
Reason I ask is I have a normal transfer case out of one of my previous xj's I can swap in it!

pretty sure the 4-low is still the same ratio, 2.72-1
i have heard (cant confirm) the 231 offers more clearance

select trac as in you have 2wd, 4 part, 4 full, N Low?
if so, 4 part locks the tcase. same with low. it's a good case. NP242. I'd keep that over a regular 231 any day... but if you pull it i'll take it :)

231 has more aftermarket support. short shaft SYE, upgraded chain, 4:1 kit. 242 pretty much just has a hack and tape SYE and not much else for it. I still rock my 242 with the rubicon express hack and tap. no problems for years (knock on wood)

Yeah thats it, I had a 99 forsale and it had the same case and everybody that wanted to build it for 4 wheeling bitched about the select trac case so thats where I had this Bad thought in my head! Out of 8 xj's I owned only 2 where 242's so ill run it and if for some reason I want to swap it out i got a 231 at my buddy's garage
Thanks for the info everyone
