Hey guys, my dad's gas tank is leaking. I ordered a new tank and straps but cannot find a sending unit anywhere. His fuel gauge works a little funny so we wanted to replace the sending unit while we have the tank down.

1986 Ford F150 4.9L 300ci 6cyl, Auto, Carb (not fuel injected).

Any help would be appreciated.

I bought 1 from Advance Auto when I redid my truck last year. Have you checked there?

Yeah, I looked...No one seems to have on for an 86. I'm not sure why. What year truck did you get yours for?

It was for an 84 which should be the same as an 86.

I'm working tomorrow at advance. I'll look and see what I can find.

LMC truck parts might have it, if all else fails www.LMCtruck.com (http://www.LMCtruck.com)

If the gage is working funny try removing the dash cluster and carefully cleaning the contacts with alchahol on a Q-tip and then put some dielectric grease on them and reassemble. I have done that with success on several ford trucks.

I agree with you about cleaning the contacts, I've had my fair share of ford instrument panels apart for cleaning. Especially the contacts for the lights. I don't think the fuel gauge contacts are accessible though, aren't they in the harness that plugs into the cluster?

I'm still not completely convinced that an 84 sender won't work but, the 84 calls for a different tank than an 85-86. That's the only reason I haven't ordered one for an 84 yet.

I did it a couple of weeks ago on my 95 F350. It could be different on yours, who knows?
Anyways, the back of the cluster has a flexible printed circuit board type thing on it that folds into the plug openings and the connector contacts that. I don't remember what year they started that. My fuel and voltage gages were inop. Cleaning the contacts on the cluster got them both working again.
