I am in need of a brake and want to know if anyone around is interested in making a buck or two on the side. I need to bend some "C" channel out of simple 22 gauge sheetmetal. I cannot get the bends square enough for my tastes without an actual brake. I need the channel to be 1 1/2" wide by 3/4" deep. In total, I need 56' of channel, yes feet. 2,4,6,or 8 foot lengths are fine, but in total, 56'.

Let me know if someone has the ability.

Thanks

you'll probably have to take it to a shop, or buy a cheap brake from HF

kinda what I was afraid of, but I wanted to check first.

If no one on here has one, I am gonna have to find a local shop to bend it up.

you can try what i do on some things,

since its 22gauge, take something straight, and lay it where you want your bend....then take a utility knife and score the material (that makes a gouge in the material and will bend perfectly along that gouge)

then take a piece of angle iron, or something else with a perfect 90° the length of the piece you are bending, and bend it against that, it will bend damn near perfect 9 times out of 10.

Anybody have any tips on how to bring 3/16 plate back to a perfect 90* hehe. The BFH method isn't working.

LOL. My problem is the neighbors. There's almost no F'ing way to do this quietly...

Edit: I wonder if a propane torch and me standing on it will do the trick? hmmm

if its over bent past 90° depending on how much you should be able to pull it back into 90 fairly simple. how big of plate?

It's not bent past. It's needs to get to 90*. I can get it positioned well enough to where I could stand on it, but I'm just wondering if the little torch will get it hot enough to budge it. It's fairly large. The bend is probably 13-14"

yeah you wont get it hot enough with a propane torch, prob not even an oxy acetlylene.

you can warm it up and it might help, but mostly you'll just waste the gas.

what is the part for?

I read your reply a little too late. The torch did jack lol. I'll just have to beat on it some more.

It's just a peice of armor that covers the rear portion of the jeep. The peice that is bent goes up under the rear of that area. I can't really explain it. No mater what though, I need to get it to a perfect 90 or it's going to come down to a highlift jack during installation. If that will even bend it...

you might try talking to someone that doen aluminum sideing/flashing /sophet work they would probably have a break capable of doing what you need. Or maybe someone that does bigger hvac work someone that does duct work. just a suggestion.

Think I have a local duct work shop around here. I might try there, see if he wouldn't mind the work. nice idea.

Are you supplying the steel?

Yeah, I can get the steel, I just need it bent. I can rip the sheets down into the 2 1/2" widths

Might take you up on that, but in the meantime, I ordered a $40 30" brake from harbour frieght. I figure it "might" do the job and it "should" survive one job.
