Lately my xj has been making a rattling/clicking noise when its stopped but still in drive such as at a red light or in traffic. It doesn't do this when it is in reverse or park. The sound goes away as soon as it starts moving. At first i thought it was the exhuast as i put a flowmaster in in october but i got under there and nothing was loose. Also, it has made this sound on and off for about year very sporatically but within the last week it has gotten much louder and happens at every red light. Any thoughts?

Where is the sound coming from? You might have some motor mounts that are in need of repair and that is causing the drivetrain to shake a bit when idling in gear.

Is it a manual? It could be bad clutch chatter.

it could be the plate over the bellhousing rattling, or the torque converter or the tranny mount, or motor mount

Thanks for the input. Its an automatic and the sound seems to be coming from where the transmission is.
