I just got this email from NORA (National Off Road Association)

"You just don't see this everyday" says Pearse Umlauf, Founder & CEO of the National Off-Road Association. "We see many trails being closed across the United States, most recently the Upper Tellico OHV area, but it's very rare to see new trails being open".
Northumberland County located in central Pennsylvania has decided to do just that; open over 6,000 acres of old coal mining land to the public for the intended use of off-highway vehicle (OHV) recreation.
"The Northumberland County Commissioners deserve a thumbs-up and our full support on this project", says Off-Road Hall of Famer, Mark A. Smith and Founder of Jeep Jamboree USA. "Years ago in California, El Dorado County officials got involved with keeping the Rubicon Trail open and today it generates an estimated 30 million into the local community. Now that's an investment worth making".
Barry Yorwarth a local resident of Northumberland County spearheaded this idea a few years ago. He has been working closely with county officials to help them make this project a reality. "I got the idea back in 2005 when I was the co-pilot for Tom Lawlor at the Top Truck Challenge in Hollister Hills, CA", says Yorwarth, "I said to myself; we've got some land like this back in Pennsylvania, why can't we do something like this?". Barry's dad bought him his first Jeep (CJ-5) when he was just 13 years old. Today Barry owns (5) Unimogs and a few Jeeps. "The park is designed to be open for all motorized users not just full-size vehicles, everyone's welcome. The county is planning to have onsite camping as well as parking for RV's".
"It's great to see the County Commissioners of Northumberland take such a proactive leap forward" states Pearse Umlauf. "The local communities and residents will benefit tremendously from the development of this park. The park is an economic "center of commerce" for local businesses not to mention the potential jobs it'll create. OHV enthusiasts from across the United States will flock to this new park just for the opportunity to run new trails. This park will allow individuals to recreate in a safe, dedicated environment."
The National Off-Road Association will keep you up-to-date on any news and developments on this new OHV Park. Stay tuned.

Hey, that chunk of land would make a great airport site! What do you think?

6000 acres would be a sweet park. That's 2/3 Rauch Creeks. If you do a aerial view on Sunbury, Pennsylvania 17801, You can see there's a lot of land that looks to have nothing on it.

A guy on Keystone Krawlers has been talking about it. He obviously has some background that he can't share, judging by his posts. He started talking about it probably 2 years ago. I believe he said they're at least a year out.

First off, it's in RC's back yard, it's even closer to RC than Paragon was.

I have never been there, but I assume this is the same land as the the Shamokin trails that people have talked about.

That's nice not that far but they should make one over here on this end, there's tons of land around here heck they have 6000 acres for sale out between bentleyville and monongahela .What they should do is open it up to 4x4ing it was a old mining site if you look at the aerial map and look at van voorhis and all that open ground from there to the right to 917 is all really nice ,I use to wheel that back in the day before they put mounds of dirt up. The last time i was out there only quads could get over and the other end is a gate

I've run those trails as well, in the snow no less. It was surprisingly extensive, but it was mostly trodded by ATVs.

Awesome! This is a great thing. Rock Run, Outback Adventure, BeaveRun, Cable Creek, that new park in WV, RC expanding across the street, and now this. Still unfortunate that Paragon closed, but it's exciting that more trails are opening up!

Hey Mel and Matt, did not someone tell you about this back in 2007 and that this would be OHV Park number two for Pa in Region 4, the grant money is coming from the ATV set aside monies, Park number one is Rock-Run in Region 3……….

There will be four more to come one in each of the six DCNR Regions it’s all part of the twenty-five year plan which was set into motion back in 2000……….

Gee, maybe if we had someone on the DCNR Advisory Board for Four-Wheel Driving (Motorized 4x4 Vehicles) (http://www.pgh-offroad.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3689&highlight=dcnr+advisory+board) we would know more about this………

Maybe next time we should listen to an old man that has been doing this for a lot longer then us and knows how to manipulate the system………

Hey Cheeks, your link was invalid. What roughly are the boundaries of the 6 regions, could you send me a link with info on this 25yr plan or is not available. What Region is Allegheny/Westmoreland/Fayette/Greene co's in? Is Rock Run the Park for that region above or is it still in the making?

REGARDING: Northumberland County Off Highway Vehicle Park Master Plan

Northumberland County will host a Public Input Session on Tuesday, July 27, 2010 - 6:30 pm, at the Shamokin Area Junior Senior High School Auditorium, 2000 W. State Street, Coal Township, PA 17866. The County has commissioned a study to develop over 6,000 acres of County owned property to create an Off Highway Vehicle (OHV) recreational facility. This meeting is being held to gather public input relative to the development of the facility.

Pat Mack, Director of the Northumberland County Planning Department, said “We want to obtain input from residents of the County regarding the proposed park. We want their thoughts and ideas on how we can develop a world class off highway vehicle park in the County. With the development of this park there will be opportunities to create jobs and provide those who come to visit the park with the goods and services they desire. The economic potential related to the development of the park is unlike anything the County has experienced in recent years.” Mack goes on to say “We have an opportunity to provide a facility to meet a demand that is not very well met in Pennsylvania. If we do this right Northumberland County can be regionally and nationally known as the home of one of the best parks and best places in the United States for motorized and non-motorized recreation.”

Kathy Jeremiah, project coordinator for the Northumberland County Planning Department, stated “The park area, which is over 6,000 acres in size, can accommodate a variety of motorized and non-motorized uses, including full size 4x4’s, rock crawling, MX, ATV, and UTV use, mountain biking, equestrian trail riding, hiking, hunting, camping, and environmental interpretation, to name a few. It is important that the public come to the meeting and share with us their wishes for the park.”

This is the first of two public input sessions being held during the master planning process for the park. A second follow-up meeting will be held in the Fall.

Commissioner Kurt Masser said “There is a lot of enthusiasm behind this effort and it has the potential to have a significant positive financial impact to the County and its business community. There are a lot of issues to address, and a lot of planning that needs to take place. We’ve started that process and this is your opportunity to share your thoughts and ideas. We encourage you to participate in this process by attending this important meeting.”

The master plan is being funded with grants from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development. The plan is being prepared by Pashek Associates, a Landscape Architecture and Community Planning Firm located in Pittsburgh in conjunction with Pennoni Associates of Mechanicsburg.

Wow... I guess I didn't read this thread back in March when I was basically called out by Mr. Nolte...

good stuff... I like how he acts that there is not someone who represents 4x4 vehicles on the DCNR committee, there is, and he is a lot older than me, and has been doing this for a lot longer than me.

Oh.. and I haven't been in the dark about this, we (officers of HRJA) had caught wind about it a while ago, but folks had asked for us not to blab it all over the internet, as they wanted to be making formal announcements...

Good Post Super Scout, I've been trying to figure out how clouse this tract of land is to Rousch Creek, in Tremont PA. Their neighbors have allowed trailriders on that 1000+ acres for an extra $10.00. Thanks
