View Full Version : Underbody liner / sealant / protection ??

I want to get the underbody of the XJ sprayed. I'm sure it'll be a pain because I'll probably have to remove some components to have access to certain areas.

I'm just wondering if any of you have experience with this. Good products to use? Place to go to get it done? DIY rental tools?

POR15 sucks on the underbody so I won't even go there. Speedliner seems to do ok as long as you don't use POR as a base, or so I've read. But it's not cheap either.

Any recommendations on tractor supply paints or others are welcome.

Thanks!

i coated my old truck with thinned tar.....sprayed it through a sandblasting gun. it makes a hell of a mess, but yeah, it works

Thanks Brandon and Jimbo. I'm going to give that guy a call and that eastwood site is awesome. I'm sure I'll be ordering from them a lot lol.

I don't want this jeep to turn into my last one and rust kills these things.

Keep the info coming, Thanks!

Another thing you could use is Carboline bitumastic 300 m

I use this at work to coat under ground pipe and piling.

That stuff looks pretty good! It says it can be brushed on also for guys like me that don't have access to spray equipment.

Thanks man. I did find their site online. It's not a bad price either. I figure if that stuff works on what you're doing with it, it should do fine on the jeep.

We pressure wash the undercarriage and let it dry inside overnight then spray it with chassis-saver or black rustoleum. Works pretty good.

I've used plenty of Eastwood products over the years, they make great stuff for the most part.

The Eastwood Rust Inhibitor that comes in a paint can and can be brush applied has worked very well for me in the past for underbody work and for misc stuff like iron railings. Pretty cheap, a can goes fairly far, and it works. I would apply Chassis Black over it as an extra precaution. As DMG alluded, prep work prior to coating is the trick or nothing is gonna work great.

His material never dries. Then if you are working on the vehicle it gets all over you. I had a vehicle at the shop the he sprayed. That shit got all over the lift pads and the next vehicle we went to lift damn near slid off of the pads. I have heard of shops that will not even work on your vehicle if it was Fennelized.

What the hell did he use to coat it oil?

limegreentj

when he did mine it was dry...it was really thick too

maybe he's changed it though since that was almost 10 years ago since i had my xj

I don't know what the hell it is but it is slimey as hell. It never dries, I have seen vehicles that were done 10 years go and it still just as slimey and messy as the day it was sprayed. It aparently works well, as your vehicle wont rust but it makes it a nightmare to work on. Ask just about any machanic in the Butler area about fennel coat and you will see he is not very well liked. The worst part is that he thinks that it is funny as hell that everyone hates him. You couldn't pay me to put that stuff on my vehicle.

I'd i say it's oil from the sounds of it probably bar & chain oil thats what the old timers use! And yeah i'd be pissed if i had to work on something like that.

It kind of looks like oil but it is thicker and kind of foamy.

Fennell it is!

j/k. Seriously though. I've heard of guys using some type of jelly that sounds a lot like this stuff. Apparently it works really good.

:flipoff2:
It does work good from what I hear, but there is no way that slop would go on anything I own. There are other products out there that work just as well, and aren't a sloppy mess.

Tom, I would really look at that lizard skin, I have heard great reviews on that stuff

I will. You're the second person to recommend it in the thread. Thanks man.

It's between that and the Carboline. I'm going to do a little more research too.

(No More Rust, resistant to salt, oil, you name it.) Its pretty much straight isocyanate.

I will say that Fennel does make a mess of your vehicle, every car and truck my dad buys goes up there but you will never have any rust problems. In the summer it takes about a week to stop dripping after he sprays it. We work on all of our own stuff so never heard of any shops complaining but I wouldn't blame them. I think it's $300 - $400 to get it done initially then free re coats every other year after that for as long as you own the vehicle.

you couldn't pay me to have a vehicle fennelized. I hate that stuff with a fiery passion. It is just as messy as Jeff said it was. If you weld anything under your jeep after it being fennelized keep a fire extinguisher handy, there will most likely be a fire

It's that time of year again... just had my truck done with this stuff. http://www.fluid-film.com/ (http://www.fluid-film.com/)

Guy only charged $55 for my truck. $50 for an SUV. Sprayed down everything, even the front of the truck to prevent bugs from sticking. He can even spray it in the Trailer wiring harness to prevent corrosion. Lanolin based.

Thats a really good price, fluid film can be pricey but the stuff is amazing. We spray it on all our snow plows and salt equipment at work. Salt can't touch it. Pretty amazing plus it wont let snow stick to you plow. It leaves a little film but is otherwise unnoticable. I use it to lubricate in air handlers too it doenst have as offensive of smell compared to other products.

The nice thing about fluid film is it will not scratch, crack or flex. It never actually drys its like putting a thin coat of really sticky grease all over you chassis. I plan on doing my Plow Scout with fluid film and motor oil. Keep the Rust Gremlin at bay

Does anyone know what type of paint is used on old military artillery guns that you see in parks etc...? That stuff seems to be very durable.

I don't what kind it is but I remember an old timer telling me it wasnt made anymore. Extremely toxic, even after its dry the dust can be very sickening.
