my wife got in a car accident today and totalled the cavy....

my sister has a 93 (or 95) jeep cherokee that she hasnt driven for a year or so (moved to SC) and she bought a subaru.

so the chero has been sitting for a while, and the biggest issue is the rear brakes....same damn thing that was wrong with mine when i had my XJ.

the front brakes work fine, but the back brakes dont grab hardly at all. when she had it we replaced the prop. valve with another used one, and it didnt do shit. im sure you xj guys have had the same problem....how'd you fix it?

Sounds to me like the self adjuster isn't working. Manully adjust them and see how they work.

^ x2 my self adjuster's aint' worth a shit for sum reason everything is brand new back there. Try adjusting them manually and see what happens. She'll like the XJ comin from a cavvy. Is she alright B?

thats not it....because my old one did the same thing, and you get them adjusted and they still wouldnt work.

yeah she is ok...just really shook up and sore as hell

First of all, im glad your wife is okay.

If the cherokee deal goes though, id start by heading out to Millerstown and picking up a set of rear disc's and proportion valve off a grand. Honestly, you can throw parts/money at the rear drums all day and they still aren’t going to work, consistently, well.

Hey B, sorry to hear about the accident, glad to hear your better half is OK. Had the same problem with the drums in the dodge. My neighbors dad took the rear brake assemblies apart on both sides, cleaned everything real good then greased all the metal on metal areas and the self adjuster. made a huge difference, if you need a hand let me know. I will bring a diet cherry coke and we can piss with it until it works.

cool, thanks for everything guys.

i wonder what all would be involved and how much it would cost to throw discs in the back.

I think you can grind the center out of the disc backing plates that go on the axle a little bit and it bolts up. I could be wrong but I think that is all there is to it. Longer E brake cables maybe, and definately a prop valve out of the donor ZJ.

ive been doing a little reading, it doesnt seem too bad....it might be worth it.

When I go to 33s i'm pretty sure at the least i'm doing the rear disc swap, possibly the WJ brakes on the front, we'll see. The rear discs will make a big difference in stopping i'd imagine.

from what i read the only real advantage is no maintenance, cuz they dont need manually adjusted.

limegreentj
03-28-2010, 12:10 AM
yeah that son of a bitch had 20K on it. still had a new car smell...lol

but i really dont give 2 shits about the car, she feels bad about it, but i dont care. i'd rather work on an xj than a cavy anyway..

Sorry to hear Brandon. Glad she's ok.

Rear discs are your best bet. My drums never worked right, even when adjusted. In the snow the the jeep would just drag the front tires in reverse.
Like he said, you'll just dump money into the drums. Do the discs.

will it ever end???

Simple answer. NO, atleast I haven't seen an end to the constant feeling of trying to catch up and never getting there.
