Has anyone ever heard of the pillowtrack?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hgy9QYD0hUk

There was a link to this on my facebook page, and I had never seen/heard of it before.

It looks like they use them in situations that are easily avoidable by different driving techniques, but I assume that is for demonstration purposes..

Would they be useful? It seems like it would take a little while to get out and inflate. Perhaps if you keep them inflated after the first use? But then they would take up lots of room in the vehicle.

I was just curious if anyone had seen it before.

i would rather learn to drive properly and not waste my money on some pool toys with foam tire tracks on em.

That's kind of the way I was thinking..
But perhaps it could be good in a few situations for people wo can't afford a winch?

I think they wouldn't be a bad idea for the folks who wheel in sand.

Maybe, I wonder how much they cost ? I think they would be close to worthless for the trails around here. Money better spent on lockers, tires, and lift. JMHO

I just looked up the price.. $165 for one or $295 for two! Way too much in my opinion.. I was thinking they'd be a cheap piece of equipment to add to some people's recovery gear.

If we wheeled nothin but sand a good bit I'd say they may be a worthwhile investment, but last I checked its nothin but rock and mud here LOL, i'd say they have there purpose, whether it fits into your bag of goodies I'd say it depends on the terrain (the price is too high for my blood LOL)

Oddly, folks on my Xterra site were talking about these. Someone from the just company signed up and posted this.

Hello,

Noticed your discussion, hope we can contribute.
Please note that the PTx are designed to a variety of situations and terrains, while the OLJ test focused on sand. See this example here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Pillow...d=327342381008.

As for robustness and durability, they PTx can easily lift any vehicle of up to 4 tons (its explosion pressure is more than double of the exhaust jacks!). see here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Pillow...d=327342381008

Note, the PTx can be inflated AFTER one is stuck in a trench/high-center to regain traction: i.e. insert under the stuck tire, inflate and drive on it (see attached).

The PTx is a drive-on-jack or a jacking-sand-ladder depends how you use it…

It does not look as mean as other devices, but with a duffle bag size and only 8Kg of weight (for a pair) they are designed to be one of the most practical and durable items one could carry.

what happens when u get stuck in the mud are you going to get out every three feet to reset the pillows when a 300 dollar smittybuilt winch can do the same thing and you only have to exit once. perhaps if the price was lower they might be worth it but i certainly dont want to spend money on something that i may never find a use for.

I think these are well suited to the occasional offroader who drives a stock or slightly modified rig. $300 for two is not a bad price to pay, especially for something relatively versatile. There aren't many cheaper self recovery options out there. The only cheaper things I can think of to help out in the situations shown in the video are a high-lift and a shovel, but that truck had virtually nowhere to use a high lift and the digging option would take 100x longer to do.

Sure you can get a $300 cheapo winch, but then you got to spend more $$ on a bumper or whatever to mount it and wire it up, then buy anchor straps, then learn to use it safely, and carry it with you all the time while you commute to work every day.

I would hate to use them in mud, but I wonder what they would be like in snow?

I can see where they would work...Just not something I'd spend my $$$ on. When I get stuck I do it right and that little air bag would not help me out none.

looks like its made for europeans in cars that look out of place off the pavement

I see no situation where that gets you out of a real jam without putting the operator in danger to place the bags?

Interesting idea, as is the exhaust jack. Maybe for the intended purpose, but for most wheeling, I've gotta ask.....why?

As someone who has been offroading on sand several times, I can definitely see how these would come in handy. Afterall, a winch only helps when there's something to anchor to, which is a rare find in most areas where one would be wheeling in sand.

True, but I would probably spend the $300 on this.

Or this for $140

I kind of like the idea. I am in the woods sometimes on my own hauling out firewood and such and even though the terrain is mild it can get interesting sometimes. And I'm not always in my Jeep so if I am in something else the portability would be nice. If they were half the price I'd be in.

I wonder what the shipping is from Israel?

couldn't a 10 dollar shovel replace that? more work I guess but wtf. it's expensive.
