I'm heading to erie to pick up a HP 30. The guy installed new brakes on it not that long ago but the axle's been stored outside for a while and he said the rotors need cleaned up. I wanna get em resurfaced or something. Is there a place that does that? Like midas or monro? I've never had it done before.

monroe does it for like 15 a rotor. but theyre not quick about it. as in, drop it off in the morning, pick em up at close. thats how my local one here is. but then again hes a tool (manager).

Hit'em lightly with a grinder.

No grinder. Sand paper. Or Monroe. The one in butler does them as well. If they are pitted at all, just get a new set.

Find a bumper to bumper they will do it for $5. I am not sure if hovis still does it. if not just clean them up with some sand paper and brake clean.

Some AdvanceAuto's and Napas will do it as well. You just have to call around.

You're more than likely going to replace the pads so I'd just pick up a new set of rotors to go with them. JMO.

This is a HP from a 99 i believe and if i'm correct the hubs are different on the 99's and 01's? I will have to get rotors for the 99 xj or swap my hubs over and get 01 rotors. Sound right?

Sounds right. IIRC they switched mid yr 99. I'd just get the rotors the same yr as the axle.

If its just surface rust sand em down. Alot of the parts stores sand em down. Scout rotors run like 150 a piece so I treat em like gold.

holy shit! no grinder!!!

UNLESS YOU ARE USING A WIRE WHEEL!

which will work...but dont use a grinder.

Use a brass wheel not a steel one

^ this.

i didnt mention that...lol, even steel wont hurt though, cuz rotors are harder steel than normal

I have a wire brush or two laying around for my drill so I'll brush em down and see. They aren't as bad as I thought.

It's just rust - wire wheel, sane paper, drive with the brakes on a bit, surface rust comes off ;)

If ya can't get it off and it is too bad open your wallet and spend the 20 bucks for a new rotor.

The dodge sat for nearlly 3 years and the rotors look like shit, drive for a day then changed the pads. Rust gone!

i failed to ask if it was just surface rust. or pay atention i guess. you have a vehicle sit for a week or 2 and it will be rusted a little. driving for a while will fix that. and worst case is you need new pads if its real bad

I have pulled scouts out of swamps, and sanded the rotors down, than again scout rotors look like something off a dump truck lol

The axle was outside for about 4 months from what I was told and the coat of rust is pretty thick, but not deep or anything. maybe I'll try the pad trick since I have two sets of pads, one from the current axle, and one new pair on this axle.

I think I might sell my LP30 with the aussie in it. I don't really like the front locker in the XJ.

pull that aussie and sell it on here. i can think of a few people that would buy it.

I'm gonna. I would really rather sell it with the axle. I live in an apartment at this time and I have no place to the put the axle. I figured with the lockrite (it's a lockrite, not aussie, my bad) in it it would sell faster and I wouldn't have to worry about where to put the spare axle.

1)buy new pads
2)install axle
3)ride brakes for first 100 ft
4) install new pads

I was tearing it down today and realized one of the hubs are seized and also both u-joints gotta go. Not looking like a direct swap in anymore. I'm gonna use my hubs on my LP and stay with the 01 brakes.

I gotta sand, prep, paint, and repair all damaged parts on this axle in my parking lot. I have it on my hitch rack and that's basically my work table lol.

I wish I would have known, I just bought a lunchbox locker for mine.

Do yourself a favor and keep whatever spare parts you can from the scrap axle. You'll be glad you did. Especially the shafts.

If you do decide to toss the shafts for some reason, let me know and I'll buy them from you.

I already have a spare set of shafts, all steering parts, and bunch of other little but major parts. If anything breaks I'll be ready :)

I'll sell ya the shafts if you want. U-joints aren't even a year old yet and less than 4k miles on them.

Thanks man. The weather has been nice to me so I've decided to do the project on my portable work bench. :043:

If you look at the knuckles, you'll notice they are rusty. The entire axle was rusty orange prior to taking a wire brush to it. It friggin fugly....but after some cosmetic modifications and a butt lift, it's looking much better.
