i saw that, the only thing making me stray from GC is the transmissions....i'd rather have an xj with a good auto...or a 5 speed!

Dunno. But I suppose you would have enough time to get one from a junk yard and have it standing by. Not that I want to put more on your plate. I am thinking about the same thing for mine, that and a transfer case. I know I am on borrowed time with it.

its really tempting to buy one for my wife, you can find them cheap a lot of places...my dad has one that is a 95, and he loves it....but it does some weird shit, and it had the trans. rebuilt once already.

i dunno, ideally an xj would be great, but a cheap zj isnt bad.

if i had some extra cash right now i'd grab that bitch up. that would be cool if insurance called and gave us some money. we've blown all our extra money on fixing my jeep and the taurus so we both have a car, and that damn taurus is so unreliable.

I would make a comment about the durability and abuse suffered by my ZJ's tranny, however I know if I do it will bite me in the arse.

But putting an AX-15 into a ZJ is so EASY!! Why drive a stupid XJ when you can have an awesome ZJ 5 speed?

Nope. Now we changed a '95 over. The 96-98 have the firewall stamped for everything, but not cut, so you'll need to cut/drill some holes for mounting and whatnot. I can't remember, you might have a check engine light on or something, but what do you care, you live in Armstrong County...

Jay knows a lot more about it than I do (he also has some parts that he might sell ya!) :)

The originals often hit 190,000 miles, and replacing them isn't that big of a deal once you get down on your back.

replacing it is not a problem (i have a pit) its just finding another good one that will last me a while. so i dont have to do it 2 or 3 times...like i do everything else!! LOL

It's working fine from here, posted by Ted_Z

5-speed ZJ stuff

I've got the following available for someone who wants to convert to a manual tranny:

Clutch pedal with hanger/mount
Manual version brake pedal
Manual shifter boot
A few details: Most of the ZJ's have the studs/holes to mount the clutch pedal (look to the driver's side of the brake booster and you'll see the block off plate). The brake pedal hanger is the same, you just need to swap pedals (the manual one is skinny and has a bend). The shifter boot snaps into the center console right where the auto one was. You'll need to pick up a hydraulic clutch master cylinder (might be the same as an XJ, I didn't get that far).

I had been holding on to these parts, but I'm fairly confident I'm never going to do the swap myself.

$50 OBO plus shipping from 80127.

Just a quick update: I found the mount/adapter for the clutch master cylinder (not pictured). The clutch MC (DB07HJ006A) is the same part used on dodge dakota's. Or the master/slave kit # is 52107624.
