Does anyone have any experience with these types of sideview mirrors??

Are they decent enough that I'm not going to get pulled over when I have the doors off.

Thanks
Ed

I put a set on a 94 YJ. They are the CJ mirrors that were used for a decade or two so you shouldn't have any problems with the law.

I did have to drill and tap the hinges to mount the mirrors though. Keep that in mind.

Are you talking about the hinges they provide or the hinges on the winshield. How intensive is that...

Are there other mirrors that just bolt on that I can use with the door off?

windshield hinges.

Since yours is older, they may already be drilled and tapped.

I would just need a bit and a drill right?

They're going to need threaded as there isn't an easy way to get up to put a nut behind the cowl. so you'll need a drill, the correct bit, a tap and a tap handle.

It's not that hard to do.

Good Deal... :) so I would just take the hinges off and tap and drill them then bolt them back on to the jeep right?

It would probably be best to do it on the Jeep. That way you don't have to fight with the torx screws

So would I just drill through the frame ?

Not the frame but the cowl. The correct way is to probably take the hinge off the Jeep but I've never had a lot of luck with that. Plus your Jeep is 22 years old. I've been there. The torx will strip and you'll be stuck welding nuts to them or drilling them out. Not fun.

If you can find someone with a CJ that is already drilled and tapped you can get the pattern from that. I may have a hinge or two laying around that I could make a pattern off of. That's what I did for the 94. Made a cardboard pattern and centerpuched the holes into the hinge. Then it's a matter of drilling and tapping the hole.

If memory serves me correctly, they were 1/4-20 thread hex bolts 3/8" long. I'd go stainless if at all possible.

So what your saying is that I should probably not try to take those torx out.

What about these...they appear easier to install and do not seem to require drilling and tapping...Am I correct? Just trying to save myself work if I can.

Not sure how different the YJ's are, but I bought a similar set of those (Rugged Ridge) for my TJ and had no problems getting the torx bolts out, just make sure you put a lot of pressure on the ratchet in towards the bolt.

I also got them for legality reason, just so I didn't get hassled by the police. A few warnings, mine whistled like crazy, and they vibrate pretty fierce, and they view outa them isn't all that swell. Although, I didn't really care because O could just as easily turn my head a little to the left or right and see if I had a clear lane to move over.
