View Full Version : Straight pipe on a 4.0

I have a 2000 XJ with a 4.0 and a flowmaster 40 and it started making an awful high pitched growling noise between 1,750 and 2,250 rpm and at idle before it's warmed up. I checked clearances and it isn't vibrating off of anything, the sound actually projects out of the tailpipe. I'm guessing one of the welds on the chambers broke. Does anyone know if it would sound half decent with a straight pipe until I get a new muffler? Thanks, Mike

Uh, no you can't. Lol but you can put the glasspack on after the cat and then just put a turn down on the back of the glasspack. And take off the rest of the exhaust, until you get the proper muffler.

Yeah mine's a 2000 too so I've got the three cats as well. Should sound alright without a muffler.

i ran with nothing cat-back in my 96 xj and it was louder than hell but i never got pulled over. straight pipes make sounds that make my pants fit tighter

Lmao. Maybe I'll run to work and bend some pipe this morning. I had a 96 XJ too and I broke the exhaust just behind the cat and it sounded like a friggin beast. Thanks Freddy.

I just bought a magnaflow cat back kit for $147 out of summit for the 96. It even came with a polished stainless steel tip!

How do you like your Magnaflow? I want something relatively loud but I know Magnaflow makes extrememly high quality stuff. Plus my tip IS getting a little dingy..

you could probably do it cheaper elsewhere. I wanted something simple though. It's not very loud at all.

Yeah I bought a dynomax cat-back for it when I first got the Jeep and it was quieter than the stock exhaust. It was on there for about 2 weeks til my Flowmaster got delivered. The tailpipe that came with it is really nice though. I like how it's bent to exit out the corner. I haven't seen too many other XJ's with a corner exit. Only think I'd change is to make it 2.5" instead of 2.25". I think your Magnaflow is a packed muffler so it should get a little louder over time.

I agree with whoever said Thrush muffler, that there is a good cheap muffler I had one on my last yota and I'll probably get another.

the thrush diddnt do anything on my XJ, just made it sound different not quieter but i guess youd pass inspection with it. when i borrowed giblet's welded, my car sounded like it was a damn tuner so i dont really want one of those again lol

I dunno it sounded good on my 3.0 yota. I've heard them on Nissan hardbodies dumped right before or after the axle and they sounded pretty bad.

All I know is for $30 it isn't real big so you can tuck it up under, it isn't a glasspack and it didn't sound awful on anything I've had so I can't say it isn't a good cheap muffler. Even if you don't like it take it off and sell it and you'd only be out 10 bucks.

Lmao! I love the fact that this muffler is becoming like the chicks on the corners in East Liberty after 7pm...everybody get a...well...you already know that one ends. :042:

I have the Borla stainless setup (with header) on my ZJ. Sounds pretty good. Without carpet it is pretty loud. Fairly deep note like a Flowmaster Delta flow. Nobody is going to mistake it for a 5.0 burble but it's not bad and doesn't rust.

GrimJeeper01
04-13-2010, 01:14 PM
Lmao!! Stacks on an XJ...I love it. I'm gonna hafta put some thought towards that. Dual 7" stacks out the back..gotta make 'em about 8' tall too. :wt:
