I decided that i wanted to take out my carpet and clean up the rust and herculine the inside of my XJ. It wasn't to badly rusted, but I wanted to clean it up before it got worse.

Here are some pictures of what I got done so far, just started touching up the XJ today.

to get the rust off i used wire wheels, and some green roloc discs. to scuff up the paint i am using medium surface discs just enough to get the paint off.
then I am using acetone to clean up before i put the herculiner on.

Day 1

here it is with the silver stuff off now ( it was a pain getting the silver stuff off but after i got it off i did the best i could to get the rubber stuff that was stuck to it off by sanding it off )

then there was a few little rust holes so i put JB weld stick over it. the jb weld worked good. its as hard as a rock on there.

here it is herculined. I plan to do the cargo area eventually. I still have a little less then half a gallon left out of the gallon of herculiner i bought.

I did two coats. I did the first coat, then waited 1 hour and 30 minutes and applied the second coat.

you mean what i used to get the rust off?

I used a wire wheel similar to these

http://www.northerntool.com/images/product/images/152047_lg.jpg

and discs similar to these

the wire wheels got in the corners good and spots where the discs couldnt get to.

its a good idea to move your ground straps. dont wanna cover them up with a liner. could cause problems in the future

If you can, I suggest doing it outside... doing it in my parents garage a decade ago when I was 18 was the last straw to getting me kicked out, haha. It stinks for a couple of weeks...

Probably would be best to do it outside anyways, i heard that it has a strong smell to it. but we will see, maybe with the garage door open and a fan sucking out the fumes it will be good enough. I plan to wear a gas mask also.

Updated the post with some more pictures of it scuffed up and more cleaned up and prepaired for the herculiner. Just have to blow the dust out and clean it up with acetone and then I am going to herculine it. I'll post pictures of that when done.

Finished herculining it last night. let it dry for 15 hours and took pics of it.

Its still a little tacky in certain spots. its not fully dry yet.

Looks great. Did you use a brush or roller. I'd imagine a bit of both but I'm wondering if you used anything special to keep the bristles from being left in the liner.

First coat I used a brush. I dabbed everything with it. Second coat I used the brush on the seams and corners and used the roller in the open parts .

if you buy the kit it comes with a brush and 2 rollers.
