Here is something I've been working on. I started building this last summer and then put it away for a while. Well, it's back out and I'm hitting it hard to get it finished. No build pics, but here are some pictures of what it currently looks like.

1979 Yamaha XS750 Special. Hardtailed, stretched. Harley tank and fender, custom exhaust and forward controls...and every thing else. The only thing that is left stock right now is the motor and wheels...

I'm trying to go for the old school, bare bones look with this one.

This is not the actual picture of the bike that I started with, but damn close.

Looks good......you're way ahead of me. I've worked on mine some this winter. Gathered up some more parts, I'm going to try to hit it hard this winter and have it ready to ride by next summer. When I get it done we have to go for a ride.

did you make that seat pan?

Yes, it's a "heavier" gauge aluminum. I formed it with a couple of body hammers over a block of wood and the leg vise. It turned out great. I already have the pad glued to it, but I still need to get the cover on it. That will be one of the last things to get done.

Thanks, It's quite an adventure putting one of these together for the first time, especially being on a budget. I'm hoping to get the fab done pretty soon so I can get it into paint soon.

That's quite a change from the original. Looks good, and looks like fun too

I love this style. low out back and high up top, with "no" handles and fairly short frame.

I like the OP's also, but when looking at it, and keep in mind im short doesnt seem comfortable to ride. (then again this is just my opinion and im sure your able to ride it a lot easier haha)

overall, yall both are doing great work. are yall doing the fab stuff yourselves?

Tore it all back down and started to do the frame molding. I'm going for the old school style molded look on the frame. I want to get everything to flow together. There is a lot of work involved here, hopefully it turns out nice.

Looks pretty cool so far. The one thing that I see that I might change is the rear brake. The bottom end of the rear brake lever hangs awfull low. Say you are leaned over in a right turn and rub the bottom of the brake lever on the ground it will jack the rear brake and slide you out. Maybe it is just the angle of the picture but it looks really low.

A lot of that is due to a bad picture. It is still a concern for me that I am working on a possible change, but I assure you that it is higher than it appears in the pictures.

Yet another night that I am finishing up at 2am. I am about 90% done getting this thing put back together. New wheels and tires are on wiring done (except fuse block it hasn't arrived yet.) Brakes are almost bled, I having trouble with the front.

I will get some more pics this weekend, I've got a bunch of miscellanious parts that I ordered today that I will be waiting on. Until then, I'm going to try and tackle the forward controls this weekend.

Enjoy.

Took it for it's first test drive today! Had to run the throttle by hand (on the carbs) because I'm still waiting for my cable to come in.

Yah Looks good. THe forward controls look a little better, But I would just be carfull on left turns. Why not jockey shift though?

steveg0690
07-24-2010, 10:26 PM
I can lay the bike over and not come close to the control linkage. No jockey shift, neat concept, but I didn't want to drive it through town with it.

Yes, that is a flying v on my leg. I built my guitar when I was in highschool. It's the offset Rhode's style. All maple and walnut with clear finish.
