I was cleaning the mud of the under carrage today with the pressure washer and is seams my rear pinion seal is leaking again, second time this year. And since I'm going to be putting on the lift I said frak it! ford 8.8 time! now just were to get it? I keep on hearing about a yard around here that had $75 axles, my local yard wants $250 for it. I can copy the current brackets on the D35 out of some 3/16ths. (plasma cutters are great)

So were is this mystical cheap axle yard?

thats the right number, i know they had some grands out there also, they have 44's in the rear i think. might be worth it also. not sure on price give em a call in the a.m.

Problem with the grand 44s are that they had Aluminum center sections, hardly any support for lockers iirc they are a lil different than other 44s. Do an 8.8 and be done with it. Hopefully Matt or Jared can chime in about the ZJ and WJ 44s, they would know more about em for sure.

edit ^ lemme know if you need a hand..
i know any axle from Cossels/U-Pull-It/Strauss is $100, i just got my front Dana30 from there.. you can call and they will tell you any price you want.. 724-529-2995 is correct.. the only thing is you have to go pull it yourself... any other info you need to know just ask.. i am out there at least 3 times a week.. there are quite a few grands an one very nice 5.9 out there by the way..

Well I'm probably going down there on Tuesday in the morning to get an axle, and see about an engine I've had it up to "Here" with the 2.5L

After a 50 mile drive and 4 hours under the sun the 8.8 is mine!

Scored one with 3:73 and a track lock diff! (atleast I hope its 3:73 and not 2:73 the tag was very rusty)

AFAIK they didn't come with 2.73 so you should be GOLDEN! :)

Not Golden at all!

I was cleaning it up and broke out my stripped bolt sockets and was able to get the last 4 bolts out and took the diff cover off, Ring gear is all is chewed up :( frak! Now I got to put gears in it!

SON OF A BITCH!!! That is the worst feeling in the world when you go to pull a diff cover and SURPRISE! That sucks man sorry to hear that.

All because I forgot my damn metric sockets, I stripped some of the diff cover bolts and only got them out at home. Need to remember my stripped bolt sockets next time.

Ok now the big question, should I go find another axle with good gears(around $250) or start cleaning this one off and put new gears in it?(gears $180-$245 + labor)

Second thought if anybody needs a 8.8 with 4:10s or other non-stock gearing I'll clean this one up and get it ready to install in trade for a 8.8 with good 3.73s

There's a Strauss U pull it at west alexandria exit off rt70 near washington, pa. I just grabbed a center console out of an explorer for my raider the other day. they have at least four 90s ford explorers, and a couple older fullsize trucks.

Ok honest opinions guys.

Should I rebuild this axle, its needs ring, pinion, and bearings (if I get the bearing/gears(used) on ebay its about $150, the axle cost $125). Or should I go out and get another one with good gears($125-$250)?

find another used one and yank the diff cover first

As far as getting another axle, i'd say go for it, If you can find one. I had a hard time getting the people at the yards to find out what gears were in them and if they had a LS, just ended up getting what was close and convenient.

So if anybody is going out to to strauss or another $100 axle yard, could you look out for an explorer with the axle codes 46, D4, or L73

Gabe......you are polishing a turd. Bad axles, under powered troublesome motor, etc. What you need is a nice built XJ. Do you know how many guns and cases of Tannerite you can haul in one of those??
