I've done some searches and haven't found exactly what I'm looking for.

I want to put an XJ/TJ 30 under the front of a 2WD S-10 with coils. I kinda would like to stick with the 4 link style and avoid the issues of long arm three links. I am also going to do this without any big $$$ kits.

Just starting the research so what input you all got?

What year s10? What are your plans on after it's built street/trail or just trail? IMO stay away from the Dana 30. They can not hold up to really any abuse. You want some really good help, follow this link

It's a Box S-10, I think an '89. This is just a mild Street/Trail, maybe a little mud, parts chaser. Trying to use up some spare parts.

I understand All about the D30. I have three trucks with 60's under them currently, and they fit the intended application.
The HP30 is a super little axle when used within it's limits and you would have trouble finding a junk yard that doesn't have many, not to mention the tremendous after market support. Cheap and easy are the key points of this build.

This is going to be a 33" tire truck that will see more street than probably anything.

The dana 30 will be fine. Get a HP and shove it under there. They are plentiful and aftermarket support is huge, like you said. Find one with the bigger u-joints, the 297's. What gears does your rear axle have?

I don't know much about the s-10's but would a driver's side pumpkin axle work with the s-10's t-case if you plan to swap an oem t-case in there? Or are you gonna go with one of the jeep 231's/242's or something like that?

Might be easier to do a radius arm/y-link setup instead of a 4-link since you only have to worry about two attachment points on the chassis and a trackbar but the 4-link would also be a great setup to run.

You'll be fine with the HP30 up to 33s unlocked If your an aggressive wheeler, Id say 35s if you baby it. S10 should have a NP231C in those years if I remember right so it should have a drivers side tcase output. Dean, what are you going to do for a rear? The S10 has 5 on 4.75 bolt pattern and the Jeeps are 5 on 4.5. Idk if they make an adapter to go to 5 on 4.75 for a Jeep but they should sell ones for both 5 on 4.5 and 5 on 4.75 converting them to 5 on 5.5. Just something else to think about. When my buddy graduates college here in a year or less we're going to SAS his 01 with a HP30, 3 link, and air shocks. We are figuring on just throwing an 8.25 29 spline chrysler out of an XJ in the back or a Ford 8.8 haven't decided yet but keepin leafs out back.

What's the difference between the 231 in the jeeps and 231C?

Got this from Novak's site,

"There are Chevy & Dodge versions of the 231. The GM versions use a five-bolt front face that is incompatible with the Jeep and Dodge six-bolt styles. The Chevy versions also use long factory adapters and have no support for improvements - particularly in shifter upgrades and tailhousing upgrades like those available for the Jeep versions."

However I did find that JB Conversions offers support for the 231C with a SYE kit. Guts wise I'm figuring they are the same, it just has that 5 bolt style front face.

Psycobilly's 10'r was a 2wd. Started off with a HP 30.

Yeah I saw that. Mud was still asking about the stock tcase that would have come in a 4wd truck that is what I was talkin about. If I was doin a 2wd to a 4wd, i'd run a Dana 300 flipped probably with the HP30

Yea, 5speed. Easier than changing an output shaft. Bill reused the 2wd frame side coil mounts. I never saw it when it had the D30 in it. I was just around for the D44 and doubler.

Don,
I should just drop it off, but then it would end up with Rocks, LOL. Did you make your frame side mounts from scratch?

I was thinking of Billie's when I started the plan.

It is a 2wd, going with the early S10 231 which is quite short IMO not that it is much of an issue in a 10r, and I have a few of them. Not sure about the trans either 700R4 or TH 350 (need to change output and reseal about $75). The 700 needs freshened and is a little bit more $$$ (about $450 or so), have not yet decided wether it will be 4.3 or V-8 either (have both) this thing had 2.8. It will have an 8.8 outback and be 4.10's.

I really want to drive this thing on the hard road locally, and maybe take it to the mud races from time to time. The only reason I want to build it is that this is the cleanest box S-10 I have seen in a decade, it has only on small ding on the entire body, no rust (from SC). I have built many of these things, at various levels (Rod, Do you remember my black pro truck with the flames?) in 2wd configurations and always wanted to do a sort of SAS Hot Rod mix.

yeah, i just srtripped it down(frame) and made my own buckets (stock tj coils) and I fit 39.5's but i had the bucket low on the frame.
But one little 2wd hill climb killed the whole front clip on the landing
