Sometime before summer I am picking up a new handgun but I am stuck on these three,

1)Ruger P345 .45 ACP (http://www.ruger.com/products/p345/models.html)
2)Sprinfield XDM .45 ACP (http://www.the-m-factor.com/html/specs_6.html)
3) S&W 357 auto .357 SIG (http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product4_750001_750051_765669_-1_757956_757781_757781_ProductDisplayErrorView_Y)

Anyone have one of these? or any views or info on them?

buddy has the xd .45 (i know you said xdm but still) and he loves it. ive shot his xd and i was really accurate. tripple safety and good feel. i didnt care for the xdm to be honest. felt a little cheaper and just wasnt as accurate.

and as a disclaimer: im about 99% sure his was the xd. ill update if i was wrong later

I'm not a gun guru, but I want an XDM for myself. Probably getting the 9 since I already have a 40 and 45, but I love those guns...

I am ruger guy myself, tho I have an XD and love it. So I would say you couldn't go wrong with those two so buy the one you like the most.

i have the .45 xdm and its a great gun. not as nice as my colt 1911 .45 though. but for the price its a great choice and theres a decent aftermarket following so upgrades are easy. i added a crimson trace laser and i feel its more accurate than the fixed sights.

Why not a glock?

ridgerunner97
12-14-2010, 04:59 PM
Out of those 3 i'd go with the Ruger or XDM. I have a Ruger P91DC .40 and the thing is built like a brick shit house. I've shot my friend's XDM and it fit my hand well and was a hell of an accurate gun. I'd go with the one that fits your hand the best, not all handguns work well for everybody, I for one can't hit the broadside of a barn with a glock, but toss me a fullsize Ruger or XD or any X brand 1911 handgun and lookout, I can't explain it its just how it is.

1. Not really familiar with Rugers at all. I think it's because they feel cheap to me.

2. The XD series is really nice and are reliable pistols. The changeable backstraps make it easier to fit many different people.

3. The M&P series is also very nice. My buddy has a 9mm, and it is a nice gun to shoot. Same deal as the XD with the backstraps.

My question is why two .45's and a .357? Do you plan on shooting a lot? .357 sig is super expensive, albeit an impressive round. If you reload it will cut down on your cost, but you don't find a lot of .357 sig brass laying around on the range which is how I get a good portion of my brass for reloading.

Overall I would say get the one that is most comfortable in your hand.

I like heft that is why the .357 is in there and I will eventually do my own loads. I normally buy revolvers (Eastwood is my last name) but wanted a semi this time around. I had S&W M&P 9mm but it was to small i Have several 1911's so this time I wanted something different. And Mykal to me the Glock is the Cherokee of the gun world, just something Mom would have........:flipoff2:

What was small about the M&P 9? Other than the caliber.

That was it, just want a little more umpf! the weight of the pistol was fine, just not a fan of the 9.

What is the purpose of the gun? Is this going to be a concealed carry weapon? Will it be for target shooting only? What will its primary use be? I think you really need to define what you want the gun for before you can really ask which one would be preferred...

Ragnorox
12-14-2010, 09:30 PM
Concealed / personal protection.

Bill
12-14-2010, 09:35 PM
Taking that into consideration I would go with the Springfield. My primary reasoning would be a combination of:

1. Holster options available
2. I have shot the SW and the Springfield (dont like the Rugers at all, shot many and not liked a one) and the Springfield just feels better to me.

No dick, that why I am asking for opinions. Thanks Bill I am leaning towards the XD, seems to be a popular one. plenty of after market options. accurate and reliable.
Going to go shoot one here in the near future.

There are plenty of holster options available for both at this point. If this is something you are going to carry on a daily basis I would look for something with a shorter barrel. It is all about what is comfortable to you though. The longer barrel models are gonna be heavier and dig into your leg/hip easier, and if you carry OWB stick out from you shirt easier if you are CC.

I've shot the XDM.45, and I like it.

Haven't shot that particular Ruger but have shot the SR9 and SR9c, their autos these days seem really solid.

Between the two, the Ruger is a bit shorter and lighter unloaded. But you give up some capacity.

Tough decision between the two, would come down to which was more comfortable to me. XDM will be more supported in the aftermarket, I like the looks of the Ruger better.

Looking outside of those two just for sh*ts and giggles....

More $ but I have my eye on this .45: http://www.kimberamerica.com/products/pistols/ultracarry/ultratle_II/

I shot this HK .45 a few weeks ago at my camp, my buddy just bought it and this was its first run, it was impressive but again is more $: http://www.hk-usa.com/military_products/hk45_general.asp It was really freakin accurate.

I have shot the S&W M&P in both .40 and 9mm, same with the Glock and Smith Sigma. Didn't like the glock or the sigma at all.

I bought the XDm .45 over the summer and love it! Got it over in Rockwood at Hoover Outfitters. Not far from you Mark and a hell of a lot cheaper than Johnsons and Gander Mountain. Plus it's a nice store with lots of eye candy from the gun world.

The department I work for issues the Glock 31, and I carry one while working, so I'm very familiar with the Glock and it's performance in the field. I have a 9mm XD, and enjoy shooting it, and I have fired the Smith and Wesson M&P as well. The XD/M&P are basically both Glock knock-offs. Both improved on the Glock in some areas, and fell short in others. Any one of them would be a safe choice. If you are an LEO, EMT, Firefighter, or reservist, Glock will sell you a handgun at the individual officer price (slightly over 400.00 w/ 3 magazines). My XD was used, so I have no idea what they are going for.

My buddy loves Glock, every time I have fired its jammed, my personal opinion is they are junk I know they are not but to me they feel that way. I have a ruger p89 and love it to death it was the first handgun I ever bought it feels perfect in my hand and has been dead nuts accurate and reliable. When I buy a gun the only thing I really care about is the feel and its a good make. Ruger, Springfield, Smith & Wesson, Sig, Glock are all good names some better than ever. I don't really care I have fired 1000s of rounds thru my Ruger and it has never jammed, Marc try em out feel them and buy the one you like the best I would shy away from the .357 simply based on the cost of ammo. I don't think you could go wrong with the the XD or Ruger.

Dick.Breakey

I do not rec the XDM for carry, esp for the summer. Look into the XDsc40 or 9mm, they are great shooting pistols, world of acessories and with a good IWB holster you can wear a t-shirt with no printing. The XDM is a little big for CC. Check out XDtalk.com if yo uare intersted and if you decide to go that route i rec a Don Hume IWB holster or a Supertuck. Rugers warrent service sucks and if something happens you will wait weeks for a turn around,XD on the other hand has great customer service.

But you are correct, for each person it is different. With the XDsc and basic tight t-shirt you cannot see a xdsc with pierce grip extension on someone like me for instance (6.1'' 200#'s).

any of the three you have listed are fine choices...you really need to go somewhere you can shoot them and check out concelment stuff to see whats best for YOU...

I will admit it is a little different for me because I shoot lefty...I have bought more than one pistol that I quickly sold because i didnt like how they shot...one was a $950 sig...another was $300 tarus...

I also dont like to CC a high dollar pistol...my most common CC is a .380 PPK...I've never carried my kimber...

I just got the springfield Xd 40 subcomp. I love it. I got an amazing deal on it at ace sporting goods. It the perfect car gun in the fact that its not as bulky as all of my buddys glocks and what not but it still shoots smooth and have very little recoil for the short 3 inch barrel. Would def recommend to anybody looking for a carry gun that isnt a 9mm.

i love my Ruger SR9. 17+1 round if they offered this in a 45 i would get that too. i conceal mine well with a leather slip in style belt holster. i am not skinny but not large either. i can't conceal my 357 other then a shoulder holster
only thing about the ruger i dont like is the trigger pull. .... wish it was lighter. other then that .... very nice well designed gun for the price. it in no comparasion to a kimberly or some of the other high dollar 1911's. but by far the best 9mm i ever shot. never had a jam up like with the glock did for me.

just my 2 cents on the sr9

It seems like there's not too many Glock fans here. I have 2, a 17 that was my first and in the spring I bought a 30SF. I absolutely love them and my new .45 shoots excellent. I've also put thousands of rounds thru the 9mm and maybe 500 thru the .45 without a single jam. But then again I'm kinda anal about cleaning my firearms. Back on topic though. I personally like the look and feel of the XD's but have yet to shot one. You seem to know whats up so I'd say try and shoot'em and you'll know which is best. And if anyone ever wants to try a Glock, mine are always up for some range time.

I think mark is going after an XD after he came out to my place.

Glock vs XD...I have yet to shoot a glock, but I have held them and at first there isn't much difference to me, in my opinion, but the Glock didn't have all the features the XD had and felt "cheaper" but I know they work. My buddy who I was shopping with left the glock and took home the XD45 and hasn't looked back. I won't knock the Glock (nice rhyme), but I'm not interested in them after the flawless experience I've had with XD handguns.

But .357sig is alot harder to find.

For every box .357sig you find in the zombie apocalypse you will come across 8-10 boxes of 9mm/.40sw/.45acp

I carry a 357 Sig at work, had no input in the matter. It shoots flat and hits hard at extended ranges (over 50 yards), and it penetrates very well, especially on auto glass and sheet metal. The agencies that issue it (TX DPS, VASP, NCSP, GASP, NMSP, etc.) like it a lot. As far as the ammo, I find it locally with no problem, and it costs about as much as .45 ACP. My ammo is issued, but I do buy extra to shoot in GSSF events and things like that. The 357 Sig is actually .355 (9mm). It is basically a .40 case necked to .355, a 9mm "magnum".

Thanks everyone for the input, much appreciated! I went for the XD 45, got it new at a far price. To late for me to get out today to shoot so I have to wait until the next nice day I guess. Are there in Indoor ranges near Greensburg? Also got a cheap Uncle mikes conceal holster for now. It's ok but I think I can do better.
