So after a few years of thinking about it I spent all day at work designing my new rear bumper. It is starting with a piece ot 5" 3/16" wall square tube and a receiver hitch I have then getting cut a bit.

is this for the 85 runner in your sig? looks solid... a little over engineered to me... but i don't know about the body lines and mounting for a runner... it looks good, but perhaps not use the 5" sq tube as a base and just piece it together with some 3/16 plate and gusset the inside... would probably be lighter and a bit easier to put together...

I went with the 5" tube so the bumper would have a solid back and have no place to trap mud and water. I might drop down to a 4" tube depending on the price difference.

it seems like a lot of people i know that have rear tire carries have the pivot on the passenger side...somethin about in case they get a flat on the highway. i really dont think it matters tho...i know you just wanted it so the rear key was accessable.

That's a good point. I should be able to get to everything without having to swing out the tire.

sealing it up makes sense, but couldn't you do that with some plate as well. so you totally box it in... just seems like you could shave some weight down but still keep the strength and design the same, toss in a few gussets before the rear plate is welded on, hell you could even make longer tabs for the rear plate to slide into the gussets and have them almost fully welded if you want...

Also a good point. I will have to see what the price on a big sheet of 3/8 is.

holy crazy overkill batman 3/8's! the design you have there is nice, i would think 1/4 at the most would be more than sufficient. especially if you throw some gussets on the inside before you seal it. if you make that think out of 3/8's it'll be easily over 100lbs. hell you'd probably have almost 2lbs just of weld wire...

if its going to be fully enclosed, think about tapping it to be an OBA tank.

I thought about that but I have a power tank so it wouldn't help much.
