Ok I got a chance to go look at a 91 w250 with a cummins. It has 160000 thousand miles on the clock with a decent body. Now the guy is asking 5 grand. It just had the injection pump rebuilt as well as other mechanical work. Now what I am hesitant about is longevity and other concerns. So basically looking for others opinions.

Auto or 5 speed? I'd shy away from an auto, but there is problems with the 5th gear nut backing off on the 5 speeds. If it hasn't come off in 160k I wouldn't be worried about it.

My absolute favorite body style of Dodge Cummins powered trucks. Pat basically summed it up. Nothing else to really watch for. By any chance is it the one on Craigslist with twin stacks in the bed, the guy was looking for offers on? I think SuperScout sent me the link to it on my facebook...

The 5th gear nut was a problem on the NV4500s that were available 94-2002. The 1st gen Cummins trucks had a Getrag that liked to blow up if you didn't keep it 2-3 quarts overfilled. There is a kit available to swap a NV4500 into the 1st gen CTDs. Those were great trucks. Rode like crap and none of the trannys were great but they towed good, the rotary pump could be turned up a bit and seemed to last a long time.

DMG is correct. Keep looking I been seeing alot of these 1st CTD's under $5k lately. I'm told the older ones get even better fuel milage. Some are reporting 25-28, if that's true, thats unreal.

^ It is true, I've seen the 2wd dually 1 tons even with an auto getting 25mpg empty. My uncle has a 2nd gen 12v with the 5spd, straight pipe exhaust, lil pump tweak, and his has 3.55's in it gets 20mpg or so.

My dad had a '90 2wd 5 speed 3/4 ton, said it would get 30 mpg if you took it easy. I think that was the last year they were non-inter cooled though? That thing would get stuck in our back yard, so much weight up front with an empty bed = helpless. Wish he would have kept that truck...

^ I'm yet to see a fullsize Diesel truck that goes "good" in slop with an empty bed LOL but those early CTD's make for hellacious tow rigs.
