Im going to be starting a new job here soon and looking for a reliable DD but also has 4wd and isnt a totally useless vehicle for me. Does anyone have any experience with the chevy S10 ZR2? I like the looks of the truck alot and it would be very nice to have a bed(down side to a neon and jeep) and 4wd(down side to most cars). Let me know what you guys thing and if you have any experience with them!

Thanks alot

Zach

weak front suspension and rear axle, push button t-case, 700r4 that some have problems with. can fit 32s stock or 33s with some trimming.

well its not going to see any bigger tires due to it being a dd so hopefully the front suspen and rear axle will hold up. I have my Yj to wheel!

I would look at a slightly larger vehicle something just big enough to be able to tow the Jeep. That way you would get more uses out of it. (and even w/ a streetable Jeep there is something nice about knowing you have a way to get home after a trailride should something stupid happen)

95% of the newer style 4x4 s-series I see seem to eat balljoints, motor mounts, and wheel bearings a d I am not the biggest fan of 4wd controled by a button

I know that ford rangers can be switched to lever action. What about s10s?

pre obd1 s10s can be. zr2s have a slightly heavier frame. if it was me i would buy a mid 90s chevy 1500.

I have had several ZR2 T-platform Blazers the only two things that I found to be weak was the Idler Arm change to a three bolt K2500 design, and the Plastic body work which broke when they hit anything, went through several set of factory flares. As for the rear Axle it’s a Corp 10Bolt 8.5” w/G80 Eaton Locker (same as an iron D44, only with a C-clip) not the 7.62” w/LS, the upper & lower control arms on mine where forged steel in lieu of the stamped steel on a standard S-10 4x4’s. It also came with a L35 4.3L CPI Vortex Motor and an E60L4 transmission not the earlier 700r4, the only PITA item was after market Wheels for proper back spacing. As for a factory lift, a lift is something that is an aftermarket item it was manufactured with a six inch height increase over a standard S-10 as to accommodate the HD UCA & LCA and the wider G1500 Corp 10Bolt 8.5” rear axle (inventory item off the corporate shelf) and 31x10.50xR15 BFG’s Long Trails, mine where OE’ed with General M/T’s on N90 wheels…….
The reason for the rotary switch was the fact that GM bright idea was to use a heating element and vacuum actuator to engage the front axle which broke more in lieu of a cable like the aftermarket repair kit that was sold……….
If you are going to pull anything heavier then a couple of wave runner or 3.5k Lbs go for at least 133” WB, min ½ ton truck, if 5.5k Lbs or more ¾ ton it becomes a stopping thing then……..

I owned a 95 for about 4 years. I loved that truck but I only ever got 15-16 mpg. you'll get the same out of a 5.3 chevy half ton.

I vote half ton too, you will get the same mileage and have a more useful package. IMHO. That said a buddy of mine had a zr2 beat it senseless that truck always came back for more. I mean seriously beat it.

I had an 01 ZR2. 5" BDS suspension and 2" body lift. Had 35's then downgraded to 33's. It was a great truck if you want 4wd just for winter, and you don't tow anything, and like to replace suspension parts like ball joints on a consistent basis. Stock you get more life out of them, but the only difference is the ZR2 has a slightly beefier frame and different suspension mounting points give it the "lift". They have a high resale value, and when you buy it in the used market, you pay a lot for a used truck. They average 5k-9k still depending on miles and options. And if you going to drop that kind of cash, you might as well get a small fullsize rig to tow with.

Here's some examples.

http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/cto/2537703800.html They stopped in 2003 not 2004. And this is a body lift or a junk suspension lift. ANd these wheels will wear out your IFS really quick

http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/ctd/2529444603.html This one needs a bunch of body work, and it's still priced high

http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/ctd/2532578883.html This one has body damage and does not give miles, but still priced high

http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/ctd/2532016661.html clean, but you will pay big money for it

You get the hint. Now If I could I would buy another one. I like the s-series trucks. But I would do a SAS and get ride of the junk IFS.
