I just ordered my kayak ..... would like to try to make a 3day 2 night trip to cheat lake.
anyone interested? no particular date in mind yet. thinking June.
wv fishing license $36 for yr or $16 plus $3 per day

I have a pongo 100 by wilderness systems. 10'
I work too much and really need to get away. wanted to hike for yrs now but no time. now I am seeing a counselor and she says i better start enjoying myself before I destroy me self.
:(

so let's see what we can come up with.

I have been considering buying a kayak as well. I have tossed the idea around for the last couple of years. Maybe this year will be the year I actually pull the trigger and buy one.

I was the same as you Bill.

there is 3 nice ones on Craigslist Pittsburgh .
one was 150$ and $250
if you buy one ... they do have different weight limits.
most that I seen from gander mountain are 250 pound max.

if anyone is serious about getting a really good one , I can give you a number on
of a place that has some 2010 & 2011 old stock at 10% and 20% off.
mine was $695 with 20% (2010 model) then layaway the kayak at 20%.
only thing store is in Paducah ky 625 miles from here.
if your order and it's paid off when I go pick up mine ... for help with gas I will pick yours. say. 1 tank of fuel 65$
takes me 240$ in fuel round trip. looking at around April / may when I pick up mine.

wilderness systems is the search
they are 300 pd to 350 pd max cap
alittle costly for 2012 models 695$ for 2010 $699 for 2011
2010 -20% off. 2011 - 10% off

store is HOOPERS OUTDOORS

For someone just starting out, Dicks always has sales in the spring. You could get a nice one for $300-$400.

My mom bought a Coleman rebel with paddle and vest for $350 at dicks last year. Pretty stable and does good for her.

bigest thing make sure it will hold you and your gear (if over night trips) and for me stability is key.
the percission kayak was to unstable. seen many flip easily

Dicks has these on sale all the time for around $269. I picked up 2 a couple years ago for me and my wife. Great kayaks for beginners. I have since bought a longer one but my wife still uses's hers. We run them on lakes and down the lower Yough near Connellsville. Awesome kayaks.

I am down as **** for this...
I work for DICK'S sporting goods, and we sell a nice fishing Kayak for like 350 bucks, brand new, with the rod holders. I'll grab up one of them. and I would relly enjoy this kind of trip. how would we get the Kayaks back up? do we park at cheat and someone drives back up river?

does dicks sell whitewater yaks? i had a flatwater that diddnt work for shit in the rapids haha

city ... it's a lake so we would park at a one of the parks parking areas.. kayak out to a camping area.
then we can either set up 1 camp then kayak out to fish. or change camps each night to cover more of he lake. by end of last day no matter how far we are from the cars we'd have to paddle back.

sloth.... look on Craig's list I saw 1 or 2 white water kayaks on there.

a 10' recerational kayak is good for up to a class 3 rapid max.

ok .... sofar i cant find any legal places to camp along cheat lake other then coopers rock at the southern end. i will continue to look
but
for the first trip out what do you think about the northern end of the yough river? connelsville to mckeesport. there are several legal camping spots and its 48 miles long might be a good trip. get underway for about 1 or 2 hrs on a friday then all day sat then half day sunday. if we dont make the whole way no biggy ... easy places to get to along the river.
here is a map of the river
www.pecpa.org/Yough_Water_Trail

jim91303

for the yough river trip here is an idea of the trip

friday - depart connelsville mile 44 travel 4 miles (2 hr) to Adelaide camp site
saturday - travel 10 mile (6 hr) to layton for lunch travel 9 mile (4.5 hr) to cedar creek park camp
sunday - travel to one of 4 pick up locations. each person can have some one pick them up at a place best for them. the rest can travel on down the river.

this is based on a 2 mph down stream paddle. from dawson to layton floating 90% takes 5.5-6 hr so this would be a slow steady paddle not a float trip. we can easily make 4 mph with out a problem. sofar i have not found any pricing for camp sites. i believe it is a domation to the yough river trail system.

more info for the yough river trip
camping 1st night would be at rivers edge campground ( www.campriversedge.com)
those who cant meet at connellsville can meet us there. 3 miles down stream from connellsville
cost would be M-TH $12 F-S $15
no long term parking here ...... drop off only

I thought you ment park up in connelsville and paddle all the way down to cheat, then drive back up, at the end to the cars.
all we would need is one guy with a trailer, then him and someone else drive the truck and trailer down, then he rides back up, with whoever goes along, and we jet down stream, and just camp when it gets dark anywhere we are. like huk fin..

Dick's I don't really think has good white water kayaks. they have some nice fishing ones though.
If you want one of those white water joints, go buy a used one from one of the Ohiopyle outfitters when they are going to get new ones.
Or just spend the cash and get a new one.

The yough flows north, and never interconnects with the cheat no matter what you do as far as I know it would be nearly impossible to do. I think you got confused, Jim talked about doing the Cheat at first, but now it seems that the Yough would be a better idea for a trip like this. :)

Jim, you still thinking June for this?

JeepSteeler
02-10-2012, 09:50 AM
I might be down for a June trip down there. I do have a 4x8 utility trailer as well that I could bring to help with transpo back and forth. I have wooden sides on it, an I'm sure I could rig up a yak holder for the trailer to hold 5 or 6 of them with no problem.

I have a Pelican 120 - nice reasonably priced yak (couple hundred bucks IIRC) I got a Dunham's a few years ago. About 9 foot, 300lb weight rating. I'm 6'4" 225lbs and it has plenty of space for gear even with me in it. Added a few rod holders and paddle clips and good to go. FWIW I like the sit-in style for rivers rather than the sit-on style, they just feel more stable with a lower center of gravity.

Anyway, I'm interested should something get put together.

I love the Yoch so I'm down with that. we could drop in below dimple rock. and come out by hazelbakers... that would be a good place to park there in Layton. and just camp wherever we feel like.
Your right the Mon will connect to cheat, but you would be fighting up stream. you could paddle down cheat river to the lake, from up in the MTs. that would be fun, might see some super back country WVyinz tho..

I don't need to go that far, I can see as many back country folks as I want 10 minutes from Greensburg.

Yes and no? We were all thinking it, you just said it... either way I think I'd be down for a weekend like this. I'd probably just take the canoe though, since it doesn't sound like we'd be going through anything too rough.

sorry all.... been away for awhile. work sucks!

originally wanted to do cheat lake but i cant find the camping type i want. so that may just be a weekend thing with 1 base camp

june still thinking of yough river trip connelsville to mckeesport. leave out on a friday ... camp 1st night at rivers edge ( others can meet up there) then kayak on down to mckeesport or close as we can by sunday late afternoon. i may even continue to monday if we dont make it to mckeesport by sunday.

jeepsteeler .... the trailer sounds good.... i too have a trailer 6'x8' i can use to transport so maybe we can leave one at our destination and use the other to take all kayaks to connelsville. stack them on and ratch strap them down. we can fit 10-12 kayaks in the trailers easy.

i cant wait .... i need to get out more often.

cityslicker

sounds like fun... Don't really want to leave my truck parked in Mckeesport.. check that.. I'm not going to leave my truck parked there...I hate that god forsaken neighborhood. Unless we can park them right near the po po station,, I think their station is right on the river.

ridgerunner97

^ I would pull out in little boston and say **** mckeesport. There is a launch right there past the bridge, that is public access, it's not a place I'd be frightened to leave a vehicle, there are EF cops and county mounties cruising through there quite regularly.

jim91303
03-10-2012, 12:56 AM
See how many people are gonna go and if not many we could park some place and car pool to connelsville and have a ride picks us up. I can probably get a parking area off rt 51 near70 where the owner has video camera on lot. Maybe meet there and car pool up to Cville.

Still afew months off. I will get a solid plan together closer to the time.

I am thinking June 29- July 1.
Or 6-8
Not sure what all is happening for the 4th yet.

JeepSteeler

Sounds like a plan is coming together. June 29-July 1 I think I'll be around, same for 6 - 8. Might be best to start a new thread with a few dates to vote on?

2 trailers - sounds like we'd have the transportation end of things under control then....this warm weather has me wound up to hit the water!!

I live near Boston right on the Yough and have canoed every part of that river hundreds of times. If you plan on going from connelsville to mckeesport you better give it more than 2 days or be ready to paddle your ass off. That's a lot longer trip than you think. Especially when the river is as low as it is right now. For two days i go from Witsett to Buena Vista. I gotta work or I'd definitely go. If you need some help planning give me a buzz. I literally know every inch of that river.
