i have a 86 chevy k 10 the guy i bought it from last summer said the tranny was recently rebuilt however i am finding that i make a bumpy grindy noise comeing out of first gear or going into reverse... is this something such as the syncros not lineing up right or more seriouse

I'd say Syncro's or a bad reverse idler, or both.

what trans? if its a 465 its fully syncro'd and thus shouldnt be doing what you say. if someone put the older sm420 in i dont believe first or reverse were syncro'd and grinding is somewhat normal in 1st and reverse

Keep in mind if it is a 465 that transmission will run a long long long time even after it starts doing that.

a sm465 is not syncro'd in 1st gear. talking 4 speed, not 3 with granny low.

If it is non overdrive it should be TH350 trans. What does it do when you go from park to reverse? Shudder

350 or a 400
Easiest way to tell is the shape on the tranni's oil pan.
Square is a 400
Square with a corner "cut off" is a 350

400 looks like Texas and has a 6 bolt adapter. 350 is square with a corner missing and has a 4 bolt adapter.

You gotta know what t-case you have before getting a replacement.

It's an 86 Chevy auto with OD, then it's a 700R4. Get in touch with Gonecheein he has(had) one for sale cheap. If it does not have OD (and it's stock) it should be a TH400. GM quit using TH350's in their trucks in the early 80's.

I think first you need to determine what transmission you have, next I would check your fluid. If it is a turbo 400 it could run forever shifting a little funny. Find a local transmission shop have them take it for a ride. Start small work your way up.

If its original... nothing ever gets swapped out on older trucks. Could be any of the 3.
