i just got my winch today, and i was just wondering, do you guys keep yours covered up while driving? or is their any recomended ways to keep em clean or should i just not worry bout it? I was just curious if everyday driving with it on front will cause rust or corrosion on the cable or if there is anything i should know to keep it in good condition.

I keep mine covered until I get to the trail head. This is my second winch, I didn't keep the first one covered and it suffered no major problems, the cable just gets dull from exposure. Mechanically I just kept it clean and painted.

I think it's our wonderful PA road salt that kills the cable...

There's a reason I don't drive the ZJ in the winter, and it's not just because it's usually broken :)

What do you keep them covered with?

Pretty much every winch manufacture will make a cover for whatever winch you happen to have. Typically they are a heavy cavas or vinyl cover, though you can get "hard shell" plastic covers for some makes as well.

Look at your manufactures website under accessories. That should lead you to the right part.

I think the garbage bag + ratchet strap method works best.

At least for the crazy guys I know that are REAL mudders (read: 44" mudders)
