View Full Version : Kayaking/Camping the Allegheny River

Yes, its another thread about kayaking and camping but this ones on a different river. The Allegheny up above Tionesta. I just ran it this weekend and its a great trip. We did 18 miles down to Tionesta.

The plan would be to head up either Friday or early Saturday. We will meet here (http://www.outbackadventurespa.com/index.html) on Saturday morning. You can rent a kayak there if you don't have one. If you have your own its $20 for hauling your stuff up river. They will take us up river as far as we want to go. There are places along the way to stop and grab some adult beverages if you want to. Lots of great scenery and places to get out and stretch.

Once we are off the river, we will head to some privately owned land for free primitive camping about 15 minutes away.. There will be a bonfire and food there. There is enough for 15-20 tents at least.

There is also some "nightlife" for those that want to do that.

Here are the photos from my trip this weekend. CLICK ME

Yeah a canoe could make it but you would have more fun in a kayak.

We do that trip almost every summer, usually in kayaks. It's a good time. We park our camper at Buckaloons and shuttle to/from Tidioute.

I have been looking at kayaks online and in the stores daily. I am trying to find the right one for me. Being a novice I am doing a lot of research before I buy. I am sure I should have one within the next couple of weeks. If the dates permit, I am in.

Dick's has a bunch on sale this week. I'm still fairly new to kayaking too Bill. This is my third season going. I have a 12' kayak now that works well for me.

Bill

Thanks for the info. I received the Dick's ad with all the kayaks in it. I also checked out Gander Mountain, REI, and Dunhams. I am not sure what I want at this point. I think I have over researched it. So much info. I am just not sure what is right for me.

I have considered a sit-on kayak, but also see the benefits of a sit in. Decisions, decisions...

Powerguy37
05-22-2012, 02:21 PM
IMO, the sit-on kayaks are nice but have a shorter season. If I lived down south where it was warmer longer I would get one. Up here I don't want to be getting wet when its 50 degrees out. Its nice to go out in the fall and float down the river relatively dry.

Bill, It's a drive, but you really want to talk to people about the perfect kayak for you and be properly fitted, go to Excursion's in Monroeville. They have decades of paddling experience and even if you don't buy from them, talking to them surely give you a much better feel for what will work for you.

Dana,

Are you actually taking your camping gear with you down the river, or are you dropping it off Saturday morning at the camp site and then heading up river to put in?

And what exactly is "nightlife"? Are we talking a dance club?

Jason, this last time I went up early Saturday morning and left the gear in the Xterra, then setup camp that night. Mike went up Friday night and camped and left his stuff there. That's what I will doing this time. Probably leave early on Friday whatever weekend we decide to go and setup camp Friday night.

As far as nightlife, there is The Sportsman where Mike went Friday and Couger Bob's...

Go see Ryan at Weigel on the Water on Elk St. in Franklin. His selection is good, prices are great, and you can demo the boats in the river in front of his shop. Good dude. We have 5 kayaks, got a few of them from Ryan.

I'm going to try make this trip. This is something I've been thinking about doing for a while now. I did some research on kayaks last night and got an idea of what should work for me. We went to breakfast at Eat-n-Park this morning and I could see all the kayaks in front of Dick's SG. Next thing I knew I had this setting in the back yard. Field & Stream 12' Eagle Run Kayak (Camo version), got it and the paddle for $372 OTD.

The weekend of June 23rd or the 30th maybe???

Depending on the dates I would be game. June is pretty much booked for me, but I could do anytime in July. Otherwise I will catch the next one too.
Is there any need for a skirt or is the water pretty tame?

Powerguy37

No need for a skirt. It's a fairly smooth ride. A few riffls here and there.

At this point I am available for any of the above mentioned days. I know my weekends in June are filling up fast though.

Not only am I available, I think I am ready at this point too... I bought the kayak, paddle, and vest yesterday. All I need now is to get it out to the lake this week and get some time in setting it up and getting a little bit of paddle-time in.

I opted for a launch permit, got it here (https://www2.pa.wildlifelicense.com/start.php). $20.00 for two years, it allows you to use the boat on PFBC access areas and state parks. You can print out a temporary permit to use right away until you get the official one.

Tidioute to Tionesta is a great float. I have a camp near West Hickory and do at least one float trip every year. There are plenty of places to rent canoes or kayaks. For those not familiar, you can rent from the Eagle Rock Motel in Tionesta or The Little Store up the highway a bit in East Hickory. I noticed this past weekend that a new place opened right in West Hickory next to the Sportsman's. For those who want to catch fish, make sure you hit the deep water under and just downstream from the Tidioute bridge (big flathead catfish) and, just before you get to the West Hickory Bridge, there are some channels that go off the river on your left (facing downriver). Paddle into those channels and throw some floating plugs for smallmouths. I can't make the weekend of the 23rd or I'd be in for the trip. Have fun.

lykofos
06-18-2012, 02:52 PM
Dana's taking care of the details / making reservations at the kayak place as far as I know. I'm going up friday afternoon. Bill, I'll send you and anyone else going a link to a private custom google map that has the camping location marked, along with some other area attractions. I don't want to post it publicly b/c I want to keep the location of the private land private obviously.

As far as special needs, you just need a tent. A shotgun w/ medium-large game slugs is a good idea too (there was a bear in the yard friday morning last weekend). About 2-3mi away from the camping location is state game lands bear / nuisance bear release location. So, take take it for what it's worth. They usually stay away, but sometimes they get curious. All food / coolers with food must be locked in a vehicle at night. We usually burn most garbage in the fire as well to avoid a full garbage bag that would attract any unwanted visitors.

There's a fire pit already built. Extra firewood is always helpful. BYOB - there are a ton of drive thru beer distributors in the area and 2 bars that sell 6 packs. We'll stop at the local grocery store after kayaking on saturday to pick up food. Friday I'm just going to go to the local bar/restaurant that has cheap/decent food. There is no outhouse on the property. The far corner of the yard is the designated piss location, for anything else, bring a small shovel and find a suitable place in the woods up the road a little to take care of business.

Bill
06-18-2012, 02:57 PM
PM me that map so I can get an idea on when to leave. I am good with the rest. I am not sure when I am heading up. It is Mustang Night at the Wexford Car Cruise this Friday, so that is tempting too... I am off on Friday, so I may just head up with you.

Decisions, decisions...

So I am offering a $25 bounty to the first person to put Bill in the water and take a picture.
