Ok so I am in the market for some optics for my AR15-

I have a flat top DPMS AR15 - with no iron sights.

I would perfer a medium range optic sight (not red dot) and perhaps a back up flip up iron sight/carry handle. Mid-grade not junk but not a wine budget. Recomendations and pictures.

The gun will be primarly be my med to long range 50-100 yard zombie killer.

This about my flavor thoughts?

I am very happy with the Trijicon Reflex on my AK

I run a larger diameter red dot on my AK (Barska) and AR (BSA). The AR has the MAGPUL BUIS flip up iron sights, which I think are pretty lame. I don't like a peep sight in the first place, and then the magpul are just kind of weak.

Magpul are a nice price, but I am also not a fan of the peep site setup. Careful ordering from Optics planet, Ive tried to order form them twice, and once they listed soemthign in stock, then pulled it, and relisted it at a higher price, which was still out of stock, and the other time, they cancelled my order, and the phone support argued that the item i was buying was restricted to LEOs in PA, which it was not (a pistol belt).

There are so many other places to buy good and half decent accessories. Primary Arms gets soem pretty good reviews on their optics, I plan on getting their 1-4 scope for the AR, and already have one of their 200lumen lights mounted on an AR that has held up great through 1 long night match and a few range sessions (so about 2000 rounds).

When it comes down to red dot sites, I've been spoiled by a friend, and eotech is the way to go.

Thanks for the heads up. I might do a bit more research.. I just made an impulse buy after watching American Guns... I will wait to see how that works out for me...

nah screw it I had researched it enough and a buddy is using BSA too. I ended up finding on on CTD thats a R/B/G dot sight, with magnifaction, laser and flasher light holders and the perhipals are included with it.

I would have loved to get a EOtech but I can justify spending nealry the cost of the rifle in optics.

Whats your price point? I have a leupold mark 4 cq t that operates as a red dot but also zooms to 3x... really nice stuff.

I will tell you, nothing is more frustrating than buying a cheap optic, thinking it will do the job, and not having it do the job. You end up hearing that little voice back there go "told you so".

As for spending nearly the cost of the rifle, its like cameras. Good glass costs money. And with many rifles, the glass can out-cost the initial rifle purchase, but if you are using it for a purpose, its like when you put massive built axles on your rig. you may get close to the BB value just in the axles, but its there for a reason, and you will use it for that reason.

Well I haven't gotten time to tinker with my BSA.... and just like my rig I wish I could afford portals or D60's... I can't so a mid grade BSA 1x for med to close range is fine for me.

that is until I start cussing it. :)

I've run Aimpoint (Comp M2, Pro, T-1), Trijicon (RX30-23), and EOTech (512, 557) optics on my AR's, and all have worked as well as advertised.

Because of astigmatism in my declining years, the holographic reticles in EOTech's did NOT work for my eyeballs, although if your vision is good or corrected adequately (I needed bifocals, as it turned out), they should be fine. The Trijicon reflex series works GREAT for tired old eyes, at the distances you specified. And now that I HAVE bifocals, I stick with my Aimpoints, because the smaller the dot, the less the "bloom" effect, which does matter at greater distances.

At CQB distances, the 6.5 MOA dot on an RX30 will work just fine. And the AMAZING thing about that bright gold dot is, it does NOT wash out in bright sunshine! :107: That was my biggest concern, but right after I bought my first, I went out & did some drills in bright July sunshine at PMSC a few years ago. Going from under the shade of the shooting stations, to the bright light, didn't result in any wash out at all! Trijicon KNOWS what they're doing, even WITH gold dot reticles!

What it boils down to is, which one works best for YOU. You can eyeball them at a gun store counter, which helps a little. Maybe catch up with some folks at a range sometime (or call up some buddies with different optics), and try 'em firsthand, to see what you like. It's a lot cheaper than the "keep-buying-'til-I-find-what-I-like" method. Ask me how I know...
