So I been kicking the idea around about building a 10/22 bench rest/tack driver. I'm kinda stuck and don't know what way to go. Ruger has the tactical 10/22 with a bull barrel, Hogue stock, bi-pod, and some other things for $569.00 msrp. The target 10/22 almost the same as the tactical but with a wood stock and a 20'' bull barrel instead of a 16.5'' bull for $499.00 msrp. Then Magnum Research has the Magnum Light thats based off the 10/22 with a 17'' graphite barrel, match bolt, and target trigger from $562.00-$819 msrp depending on the stock. All the mentioned rifles are good but will need improving. So this is the dilemma do I buy a high end 10/22 and put more $$ into? If I went that route I could buy a Kidd supergrade 10/22 for what I would put into either three? But what I really wanna do is buy a new/used base 10/22 and build it myself but here again with the price of all the parts I could be in a custom built Kidd?? Too many choices lol

Sounds like a lot of your interest in even having the gun is tinkering with it, you want to custom build it yourself from what i'm reading - so along those lines, get the less expensive option, maybe the 10/22 target, and then gather up all your parts and tweak it just how you want it.

I would go for the Thompson Machine Operative. Not exactly what you are describing but even more awesome.

The Operative is awesome and the price is very reasonable. I think I'm just going to build one. That way I can take my time and put a little into it here and there. I'll probably start out with the carbine with the wood stock and go from there. I want to take the factory stock and make a bench rest stock out of it I think it can be done relatively easy. Now I gotta do more research and figure out what parts I wanna use.

Why not just buy a receiver and work your way up?

You could even go the 80% route: http://www.ruger1022receiver.com/
