I was thinking about having the slide on the new pistol I'm buying today Duracoated. After trying to investigate how much it would cost, I saw shake and bake kits were only 35 bucks. That includes the degreaser and paint in an aerosol can. I guess you just have to clean it off real good with the degreaser, bake it in the oven to burn off any remaining chemicals, spray the paint, and bake for 15 mins. Seemed easy enough and the reviews I've read say its pretty easy. Anyone on here have any experience with applying it?

Given the hardness of the finish, I'm sold on CERAkote personally - especially on a pistol. Something that will be holstered and re-holstered repeatedly, is likely to leave finish on the INSIDE of the holster...

I will have to look into that. Can it be done DIY? That was one of the main reasons I liked the Duracoat, i could clean, paint and bake all at my apartment. Rather than having to use a spray gun over my old man's house. The holstering wouldnt be that big of an issue. I dont plan on carrying the pistol at all, hell, I dont even have a holster for it. It's just a range gun to play around with, I just wanted to clean up the appearance of it a lil bit

There IS a cold cerakote process, but I don't know if it's DIY. I had a 1911 and an AR hard (baked) cerakoted, and the results are AMAZING!!! IF cerakote is not a budget buster (and it's really NOT that pricey), that's why I'd recommend it FOR a hard-use, daily carry piece!

My 1911 - BEFORE (the finish was rattle-canned on!)

After cerakoting, new grips, and a new Wilson ambi-safety. :025:

The PREVIOUS owner rattle-canned it!!! He was also a police (1911 & Glock) armorer for his PD in FL - he did the custom bob-job as well. He also shot competitively with it, so it saw a LOTTA wear!!!

Amelon Coatings, LLC down in VA did the work on this pistol - http://amelonfirearms.com/ As far as cost, I wanna say around $175 when I had it done a few years ago. That included shipping, and a discount through a firearm board I belonged to, as they were site sponsors.

Poke around their website and drop 'em a line - quotes are free! :003:

man, 175 is more than I paid for the gun lol. I do like the looks of that cerakote coating though. Reading about it they claim its 8x more durable than duracoat finishes and help up to no corrosion at 300 some hours of salt spray testing... pretty good stuff. I'm gonna hafta ask around and see about having that done. Thanks again for the suggestion! I'm thinkin now, black slide, drab olive lower...mmmhmmm lol just like the 1911 on their homepage...badass

Well, I guess it DOES depend on the gun! :p:

I only gave $600 for that Kimber, so the cerakote investment was WORTH IT to ME! Don't reckon I'd wanna cerakote a Hi Point or some such.

Here's my AR-15, btw - it was coated by Tactical Toolbox out in Mapleton, OR. http://thetacticaltoolbox.com/STS-Arms.html A bit further away, but I got the cerakoted lower as part of an STS Arms deal, and figured I'd just go ahead and have a rifle done as well! He built the upper for me - the barrel is ALSO cerakoted. :004:
