View Full Version : If you have a cold air intake, get rid of it!!!

I went thru a puddle less than 2 ft deep, and my cold air intake sucked in water. Hydro locked the motor. If you have a cold air intake, and go thru mud and puddles, get rid of the intake! Very expensive lesson for me. When I get a new 3.8 installed in my jeep, I will be buying a rugged ridge snorkel. I can't stress this enough...cold air intake on a JK=trouble!

It depends on the cold air intake. A cold air intake can also take your intake higher, not lower. But to your point, in general, you don't want to lower your air intake point.... That's an expensive mistake.

Most of them use cone filters, without a pre-filter. All you are doing is letting dirt in your jeep. Goes double for K&N snake oil.

If you want to risk $3000 just for the motor, go right ahead. My cold air intake had a cone filter, and sat up higher than the factory box. Problem with cold air intakes is they are not surrounded, and will suck water when splashed up at them. It happened in a split second literally.

You had an open cold air kit?

Not only is mine enclosed, I added motorcycle drains to the bottom.

I never said I wanted to risk anything. I'm sorry for your loss. But I did feel the need to clarify that saying "Thing X is always bad" when a little more research may be needed. Depending on how you build it, many would argue that a snorkel could be a cold air intake, as well.

I found it best just to plumb mine directly to above my wheel well. That way, I'm sure to ingest as much water as possible in as short of a time-frame as possible. That's efficient!

(Those that don't know me must really struggle with this post.)

It takes more than just splashing water on the filter to hydro lock an engine. It would have had to suck in a cup or two of water to lock it up. I doubt that the cold air intake had much to do with this. A snorkel would have helped. But you would probably be in the same situation with a stock intake.

I just added a cold air intake. Not because I believe it will change my performance in any way, but because the stock air box would not fit any more with my new fenders. I chose the THOR Cowl Intake, which uses a cone filter in the cowl area and should be much better protected from water than anything else I could fit under the hood.

My main defense, however, is to drive slowly and carefully through water instead of roaring through at speed...!

I cut a hole in the back of the stock airbox, added a bit of 3" PVC pipe, and sealed off the front stock opening. Works great! moved the intake up by about 5 or so inches, easily on level with the throttle body.

The cold air intake I have is open element. It's a spectre. Like I stated earlier, it's your motor. The water splashed up, and the open air filter sucked in water. Do as you please. I was simply just trying to save people from having to replace their motor. After my scenario, I will be running a rugged ridge snorkel.

My XJ is plumbed this way, works great Ross!

Silly Jeeps, I filled the Scouts motor with Water and sand once, it was running with a crankcase filled with water. Still running to this day.

Water, coal, and tadpoles (seriously!) in every drivetrain component that had fluid. Drove it two hours home like that and then to a dealership. What was amazing was the increase in power after getting it out of the pond. The dealer had to flush everything three times and showed me the amount of coal and dead tadpoles they cleaned out of it. Drove it for four years afterwards. I lost the transmission eventually. :)

Oh here we go...
I ran a (dumb, but it fit well) dual K&N style but routed it to the top of the hood, I think it may have been a dual turbo-city intake. It would suck hot air from the headers, but the point is that it depends on how you use it on your rig, where it's mounted, and what you're doing with it. What works for one person may / may not work for another. From what the original poster described, I probably wouldn't run that on a JK without some modification either.

Worked great on the grand-Cherokee-buggy, never had an issue.

I learned an expensive lesson just like that in my JK with a stock air box back in 2011 at the charapp jeep round up.they had a trail set up with a mud hole and my inexperienced self kept driving though it not ever giving it a thought but after about 8 times the JK stalled out in the middle of the pit got winched out she fired right up and not giving it a second thought did it again with the same result after the 3rd time someone approached me and enlightened me to what was going on. The drain holes in the stock air box were clogged with mud ,leaves, sticks and live tadpoles . The K&N filter was floating in the air box and the butterfly for the throttle body was packed with mud.the JK lasted for another year before she started burning more oil than gas and I traded it in.chalk it up to one hell of a learning curve

Yep. I won't be flying thru any mud holes anymore, and will have a rugged ridge snorkel. Expensive lesson learned.

With a snorkel, you'll have to watch out for low branches ripping it off.

Lmao!!! What is wrong with that guy??? That's why I will be buying the rugged ridge modular snorkel. You can drive around with it off, and put it on when needed.
