Anyone with experience with the Patriot? I got a TJ and a XJ (gonna part out or sell) and need something for a 20 min commute to work on the turnpike. It MUST be a jeep. My sister drives the patriot but she calls jeeps "cars" so I can't really take her opinion seriously.

I'm looking for something 10k bucks or less.

Are the older Liberties be more capable (:unibrow:) than the patriots?

We have a Compass; from what we know, it's the exact same frame/engine, just a different trim. Patriot is more boxy, Compass more curved front/back. We still call it a jeep, just not "the" jeep. Liberty has more clearance, but not sure how they compare much more than that.

Lady in my church has one from '08 (got it new) - replaced the ball joints on it recently - the front end seems to be a weak link in those models in general. It's given good service otherwise. Another lady bought a new 2104 model last year - no issues so far. I've no idea on the gas mileage, though.

did she travel 89 years into the future to get it? :002:

I heard the 2104 models use anti-gravity boosters to hover over the road. Zero wear and tear on ball joints so they last forever.

I picked up a 2005 Grand Cherokee limited Loaded with the Hemi for $7k. I has 150k miles, but we got it as a temp dd and then if will turn into a beater/winter only dd once my wife's car is paid off. For $9-$10k you should be able to find a bunch of new lower milage Grand's, I would look there before I would ever consider a liberty.

Hang out at the Mall parking lot until 4 in the morning, fully armed - ready to give Marty a hand against the Libyans? :066:

Don't know about the gas mileage on the Patriot, but my wife's '06 Liberty doesn't do a whole lot better than my '04 TJ Unlimited... maybe 15-17 MPG
Doesn't seem to do too bad in the winter and maintenance wise it's been pretty cheap (no major issues to have repaired)
How well it does off-road....???? She won't do much more than through a grass field.... but is is "Trail Rated" and has parked at a Holiday Inn Express before!! :icon_super:

Um, didn't that happen in 1985? Sheesh. I was thinking busting out the hoverboards.

I was either a senior in hi skrool, or a freshman in college when it came out - it was 30 years ago, and I saw it ONCE in the theater. After seeing Pink Floyd @ the Dean Dome in '88, I'm amazed I can remember ANYTHING from the '80's - other than cheap gas, and my '79 Bronco! :paranoid:

You having any issues with yours? I keep reading about electrical gremlins in the Grands. Does that pertain to all the grand cherokees or particular years?

I have only had it since May, but no major problems yet. I've put about 5k miles on it with no issues other the gas gauge quit working for a couple days then started again after I ran some fuel system cleaner through the tank. So far so good, love the hemi!!

What kind of mileage you getting?

You got me tempted. I've always ran 4 cyl jeeps and the thought of jumping to a hemi makes me pitch a tent.

I averaged almost 20mpg on the way to upstate NY and back over the 4th of July. It stays around 15-17 during the week, which is half I80 and half city driving in Sharon Pa. There was a WK limited with the Hemi on youngstowns craigslist the last time I looked, think it had 150k on it. I just used the Jeep to drag a LARGE 40FT oak tree out of the woods, it was awesome having all 4 tires spinning and 320hp pulling!!

Other than blind brand loyalty I can see no reason to ever buy a Patriot. There are a ton of better cars out there.

I had an 06 hemi wk limited as well. My wife averaged 13
.. or worse.

I put jk Sahara wheels and tires on it and was able to squeak 18 on all highway trips a few times.

If you're looking for mpg no f'ing way would I look for a wk1

Oh also. We had a compass for a while. Which is basically a patriot underneath.

It was ok. Pretty gutless. And the cvt trans is annoying. But it got upper 20s low 30s for mileage. And it was comfortable.

Ours was a limited and had really nice seats. But it was pretty small inside.

I'd rather have a newer escape personally.

Thanks for that info and all the other info in this thread. It's very helpful.

I starting thinking about rebuilding the xj and maybe lowering it and running smaller tires. The drivetrain is solid but it gets crappy mileage because it's up 5" and running heavy 32" retreads. It might be cheaper overall just to modify the xj for the highway commute.

I wonder how low I can take it with the RC long arms. They are radius style arms with currie joints and i'm not sure if it can handle 2 or 3 inches of lift. I still have about 3-4 inches of thread showing on the main arms so I got plenty of adjustment.

I would keep your jeep, change nothing. Buy a work beater. Cars are cheap now that scrap is down. You could score a decent banger ride for less than 2k.
