View Full Version : If you had $3000 and a 30 minute commute to work.....

....what vehicle would you buy to handle the 30 minute daily drive?

The commute will be from the Beaver Falls exit to the Cranberry Exit on the TP.

I'm looking for something more fuel efficient than my TJ and XJ and has to have clearance to get up a steep and rough driveway.

Nothing. Just drive the TJ. You'd probably have to drive a civic for 10yrs to make up the initial investment vs fuel savings.

What he said ^ 3k buys a ton of fuel. Not to mention extra insurance, extra maintenance, etc. I drive a tj 100mi/day. It gets 17-19mpg depending on how pissed off I am. You won't find a lot in your price range that will get better mileage and still be good in the winter.

If your Jeep gets 15mpg and you drive 60 miles a day (30 mile each way), it will take you 300 days to spend $3000 in fuel (at 2.50 a gallon). In the same amount of time (300 days) you will spend an additional $1125 in fuel to fill your 40mpg car you spent $3000 to buy!!

It's the taxes and insurance that get you, money you will never get back.

If your saving thousands of miles on your good vehicle, that makes more sense. In that case any $3k car would do, in the end your still spending the same money, and have a beater when your done.
But if your 'good vehicle' could be someone else's beater... it don't make a whole lot of sense.

The point of this is to preserve my TJ and XJ so I don't rack up so many miles on them. My TJ is a 1999 and XJ is a 2001 and I'd like to keep them for a long time. I only drive 6 miles to work now so it's not bad and I just hit 100k miles in the TJ last weekend. Rust is taking it's toll on both vehicles as well and I'd like to keep them away from the salty winters if I can. The fiance also wants a more comfortable vehicle to drive in. We went to VA in the TJ (15 hours of driving) and she was not a happy camper with the bouncing around and constant bobbing head from shifting. She also wants to DRIVE and cannot do that in the TJ since it's a manual.

I refuse to buy anything NEW or newish cuz I hate all the electronic control crap so I'm looking for something older. We used to own and DD a 1999 pontiac grand am and it was a nice car but the rust got bad and we had to sell it and been relying on the jeeps ever since. Now we are free of debt with a low mortgage and higher income so we can afford another DD.

I bought a Saturn S series for 400 dollars and drove it for 3 years. Great cars. I then bought a Kcar and drove it for 2 years. Awful car. You can get a decent car for 1500ish with out question. I'd look at saturns, or 90s GMs. Just my opinion.

I actually owned an oldsmobile in HS. It was a "Ninety Eight" version, which was like a Cadillac and had the computerized data panel that was f-in cooling for it's time. I loved that car and drove it 90 miles a day for two years. I wouldn't mind another one.

But a truck would work better as long as it's reliable.

i don't know about that. but the heater cores go, the blend doors break, the 4.7 is hit or miss on reliability, the seat heaters burn up, the sunroofs leak and get slow, the window regulators have issues, the rear wiper usually doesn't work...

but other than that they're good lol

I have most of those issues with my XJ. :038:

I like the idea of another jeep and a more comfortable one. I see alot of them on CL and shouldn't be too hard to find a good one. They always look good with some black crager d-windows and 31's. Oh no........i gotta get that idea out of my head before "IT" starts...........

Toyota Rav4, my girl has one and they're animals. My driveway is 1/2 mile and rougher than some Jeep trails. I don't plow in the winter and it just plows through. Even on road I.think it was more stable than my XJ and Silverado. And Toyota is a very quality built auto.

Get a Tahoe or burban. They are worlds nicer than a WJ. I have repaired the following items on a WJ and they are all considered normal. Radiator, control arms, oil pan, transfer case, head gasket "4.0", window regulators, blend doors (quick fix), tail pipe, muffler, fuel pump, cam sensor, crank sensor, and that doesn't include normal wear items like brakes, wheel bearings, universals, etc.

I bought mine with 128k miles back in May. So far I've just replaced speakers. I don't think I did anything else but put almost 10k miles on it and keep changing the oil. I'm sure something will break soon, but its a high mileage SUV, I'm not going to be surprised. I read the WJ 4.0L sucks for some special reasons. Get the 4.7L Limited for all the cushy goodness inside. I'm getting 17.4 mpg right now. Look for an Overland edition if you really want to get fancy.

17.4 would be a dream. I can't even hit 200 miles on a tank in the XJ and get maybe 190-210 miles out of the TJ.

Lib gets the same mileage with her 4.7 as she did with her 4.0 about 16.6. She runs a lot of stop and go and a ridge. Josh yours had all that nonsense fixed. GM fullsize suvs are still nicer, and more dependable.

What kind of mileage is she getting? I was reading about Hyundai's false mpg claims and how they were compensating buyers for the false info or misprint. According to the specs, I should be getting around 38 mpg with ECO activated. We'll see.

We did drive it a bit last night and the gas gauge did not drop a single bar the entire time. It's fu$$ing amazing. That usually does a 1/4 of a tank on my TJ. I'm gonna miss the gas pump. We had formed a bond over the years.

I'm still going to drive the TJ and let the lady have the car. I don't want to be spoiled by the smooth ride and all the gadgets.

So it's been a while with this car...or should I call it a pos silver thing on wheels?

This car sucks. I refuse to drive it anymore. What in the world is up with the suspension on this thing? This is a car and it's supposed to ride like a car, smooth and easy but instead this pos thuds on every bump and you feel it through your spine. It shudders on every black strip on the turnpike which is extremely annoying. No chance of catching a nap in this thing. My TJ rides better for pete's sake. Any speed above 70 causes a shaking in the front end even after having it aligned and tires rotated/balanced. The front windshield is downright retarded. No setting in hvac control panel can clear the damn window. It's either smeared or fogged up and water keeps forming on the outside just above the vents regardless of what setting i put it on so I'm the only dumbass on the road with wipers going and it's not even raining. The seats....oh man do I have a flat ass from these hard seats. I can barely stand the 20 min drive to work. The HVAC is equivalent to placing a plastic bag over your head. It seems like the car is so air tight and it recycles the same air over and over that it makes breathing a chore. If I crack open the window just a hair when it's raining then bam, the whole inside of the door is wet.

Oh yeah it costs $400 for a 60k mile service and nothing is wrong with it. :013: I can do the same services on my jeep for $70. (sigh)

Only decent thing about the car is that I was getting 35 mpg at 60 mph (when I did drive it) while the lady gets 29-30 at 70 mph.

No more new cars for me.

We took it to the beach decent little car. Be better they put a turbo on that base 4cyl it lacks loaded for vacation on the highway

Hyundai sells a decent car for the $ now a days anyway. However PARTS for it will funk you big time. My Daughters needs an alternator and a power steering hose. That's about $300 - $350 for two simple parts. So the 10 year 100k warranty is great but dump it for another when it goes out of warranty lol. This car only has 98K I'll have to sink around $1000 into it to be dependable again.

I think fuel is more important so I will go for a car not for SUVs my first option will be toyota VITZ or I will go for Suzuki SWIFT which will provide me best fuel consumption
