Hey all,

I just picked up a 98 TJ Wrangler about 3 weeks ago. Small 2.5" lift, with some 255/75/17s. Put a winch on it, and got some Discoverer AT3's sitting in the garage waiting to be tossed on once I find time. I am located in West Newton, just bought a house out this way about 3 months ago. For those unfamiliar, it's 20 minutes from Greensburg and 20 from Elizabeth (middle of the two).

I heard there's some good wheeling in Adamsburgh, also, heard of Blue hole before. Not looking to destroy the jeep, just hit some trails and have some fun. Can anyone recommend some places to start out and or to hit some trails and have fun on?

Appreciate any suggestions, thanks all

Hey man, yea I see we're neighbors!

I just called Nemacolin, they said bring your own vehicle, $125 for the day. Looks like some decent trails too. Might be taking part in that real soon.

Some others on the wrangler forums are advising me to be careful, something about water into the vent line on the transmission. I guess I better read up and seal what needs sealed accordingly before hitting the trails.

Consider joining a local 4WD Club in the area, so you can meet some people who KNOW the trails, and wheel with them. MY local club (http://steeltownoffroaders.org/forums/), but you live about halfway towards many of the places we wheel (Doe Valley, Ligonier, Rock Run, et.al.) There are many other clubs in the area, and some of their members will hopefully chime in as well.

Thanks, how do I get a hold of these clubs? Are there other forums I should frequent to link up with others for 4 wheeling?

We've always had a policy here of not publicly posting wheeling locations that aren't really open to the general public. We will tell you about Rock Run, Doe Valley, Rausch Creek, and any other legal wheeling locations that are open to the public, but we don't like to post the locations of local trails of questionable ownership on the internet. You never know who is reading these public forums and a lot of the smaller local wheeling spots are already plagued with idiots. Be patient, and wait for organized group outings where you can meet some people and get the info face to face.

Nemacolin sounds way over priced.

I would PM you directions to the Ligonier trails, but beware, the potential for getting lost is pretty high with the spider web network of trails out there if you're going alone.

Also, it is hunting season, so I wouldn't venture out on any day other than Sunday out of respect to your fellow outdoor enthusiasts.

Check out www.HRJA.org (http://www.HRJA.org) Great club and they have access to private land for wheeling on. But you must be a member or a guest of a member to use that private land. And they do many trips to offroad parks throughout the year for both members and non-members.

Currently the membership is full (capped at 250 members) but you can still get on the waiting list. There will probably be openings after the first of the year (when renewals are due)
Either way get on that forum and introduce yourself.

And keep an eye on here. We used to have trail rides posted nearly weekly, but it's been pretty dead lately. The core group has become pretty lame! But people still go out, they just don't invite anyone else....

Thanks for the tips guys, I figured there were some trails near by but wasn't sure if we're allowed on them. I'll keep an eye out for local meetups.

Not sure what kind of transmission you have but my 3spd in my 00 TJ had a vent inside the bell housing if I remember correctly. I had to remove the transmission and fab up my own breather line for it cuz the transmission before that one sucked in gallons of water.

There are lots of trails around here but I think you might be too far. I used to live in Penn Hills and went to a coal mine area in West Newton to beat on the jeeps but that was about 10-15 years ago. Not sure if it's still there. Lots of fun to be had there...

there used to be an old slate dump area back somewhere near new stanton and hunker area, but its been a couple years since ive been out there, i used to ride quads and dirt bikes out there. i might have to go check the area out and see if its still there.

Steeltown Offroaders (http://steeltownoffroaders.org/forums/) has a lotta South Hills & Mon Valley folks in it. Check 'em out there, and the Fazebook page is linked there, too.

Quite. Here's the "Events (http://steeltownoffroaders.org/events.htm)" Calendar - we have group rides (at least 1/month) planned through August; they'll be posted shortly. Monthly meetings are the 2nd Thursday of the month. They're usually held at the Gander Mountain in West Mifflin, unless otherwise noted.

You can be as active, or IN-active, as you like. And I wouldn't join, 'til you've been to a few meetings, and maybe an outing - just to make sure you can tolerate us. :081: I work on Sundays, which curtails my wheeling to, Friday nights & Saturdays! Because nobody EVER goes wheeling on Mondays - my day off! :disgust:

yeah typically i work monday through friday, but with my job they could call me at almost any time and tell me they need me to go somewhere. it is very rare they call me on weekends but it has happened before. ive had the jeep for about 3 months now and havent been out so im itching to go, i need to figure out where this death wobble is coming from though, at first i replaced a tie rod end and it fixed it for a while but now its doing it again, cant go wheeling with a death wobble.
