View Full Version : What's your rig weigh?

I'm in the planning / budgeting phases of the next rig, and, well, trying to combine this with our RV plans. A lot of the toy haulers I like have a ~6,000 cargo capacity, so I feel like for safety that really means 4500-5,000 absolute tops rig to haul. I'm trying to figure out what I could build that has 2 front seats and 3 rear or a bench that'd be versatile / fun enough to drive on the street as needed, but not suck off road.

I have no idea where I'm going with this yet, I just know it's going to be expensive. LOL. We considered driver-RV's but the versatility of that plus a 1 ton truck really isn't as much, and it seems to be closer to 140K (holy hell) which is well over a toy hauler plus used 1 ton with about 40-50K on it.

This is a few years off, but I'm not opposed to finding a rolling chassis of something now to build slowly. We have our third kid arriving in May and figure we'll really want to be out as weekend-warriors when they're a few years old. I've got time.

you should start with a zj then modify it until it is to heavy to pull and no longer street worthy.:icon_keel:

or a suzuki?
Tthe 3 seats in the back are going to be the problem or more specifically a seat big enough that you can fit 3 car seats or 2 car seats and a booster seat. in not sure what the inside width is on my rav4 but i cant put 3 car seats in it.

A toy hauler at close to max capacity can be a nightmare to tow because all the added weight is behind the centerline.

Most of my rigs have been between 4500 and 5000 pounds without a driver, btw.

A 3rd kid on the way and you're planning a build project!? Where do you get the time for that? I've only got two kids and I don't have time to scratch myself! lol
3rd generation 4Runner? Curb weight is 3930 lbs. Not too big, not too small, good on and offroad, reliable, decent aftermarket support.

My TJ was right about 4000lb. Had it on a scale.

Any factory made toy hauler you will not be able to fit a jeep into. And you will have a hard time finding one that will fit a 4 seater sxs. Most have a 10' garage which is not enough for a 4 seater. There are a couple companies that will custom make something for you but they are very pricey.

I custom ordered a box trailer last spring, and finished the interior as a camper. 30' goosekneck (22' box 8' goose), I added camper door, 4 windows, 120v 30 service, finished ceiling and wall and vents. I put a king size memory foam mattress in the goose, Garage paint floor, stain walls, curtains, Added cabinets, refrigerator, 12v inverter, AC Heat, extra lights, plus all the interior decorating my wife wanted to do.

I wasn't worried about water because pretty much everywhere we go has bath houses. I may add a simple sink in the future just for convenience.

It will hold pretty much any toy I have. sxs, Jeep, pulling tractor, show tractor, I even think the M37 will fit in it. It's a 12K lb trailer, should be able to haul about 6500lb cargo. I had them add cross members in the floor to accommodate my pulling tractor, extra tie downs, internal beaver tail. I had it made with barn doors rather than a ramp because the ramp was not rated high enough for my tractor. I added aluminum ramps which work perfect.

And with a little one on the way, I think it will work good, there is plenty of room for a pack and play and all that jazz that goes with it.

I have pictures but am failing at getting them posted here. I'll work on them.

My 3rd gen 4Runner is 4500 pounds. Steel wheels, 3/8 thick skid plates, home made bumpers that are heavier than needed, Hi-lift jack and some gear. I've had my 3 kids in the back and it's a little tight. One is in a car seat. Wish I had a 97 land cruiser for more room, but they're even heavier.

Hmmm the more I research, the more I realize this idea might not be possible let alone affordable :(
We're definitely getting an RV for family camping, and I'm definitely getting back into wheeling, I just can't seem to find a way to combine the two without a winning powerball ticket, which is unfortunate. I guess it'll be a trailer again for wheelin' trips and a tent.

Thanks for the input everyone, definitely eye opening. Way to crush my dreams :042:

Although this might be something worth looking into... I hadn't really thought that shower/water might not be needed since we're talking about roving between areas that have showers anyway. Luckily we have a few years to figure this out (youngest is due in May and we're done at 3 for the love of all that is good and holy) and aren't planning on getting out there until they're a few years, but at some point I'd love to see pictures and a guesstimate on what it cost if you wouldn't mind. I'm currently driving my wife's old Tucson until we figure out what we're doing since that'll decide what truck I need. It makes me sad!

I paid about $12,500 for the trailer custom ordered to my specs, with basic finished interior and 120v electric. Then start adding finishing's. The little hundreds here an there add up, but doing the finishing ourselves saved thousands. Probably have $2k into extras. I still want to add an awning that's about another $1k.

Very nice setup, Oros. Can you put the SxS and jeep in there at the same time? I am guessing that isn't a RV but a converted enclosed trailer? So you can put the rig further forward.

oros35

The sxs is too long, but a bike or the right quad should fit. I went with this size to keep my total weight down and keep it a tandem axle. A lot I've seen go 36' (I'm 30') and triaxle. I'm happy with the length I went with so far. It is an enclosed trailer, loading it isn't an issue. Where the Jeep sits, the weight is perfect, I can easily forget the trailer is back their until I go up a hill then the 12K lbs kicks in. Being a gooseneck, weigh distribution is very forgiving too.

Very nice setup Brad. I'm working on getting rid of my fairly new PJ Buggy Hauler at 14k gvw for a 28ft gooseneck in the 14 to 17k gvw range toss my 8ft truck camper on and off it. Leave me with 20ft of deck for Jeep, or SxS's, or a few 4 wheelers, even take it camping by itself if we are going for a long weekend somewhere me and my brothers put firewood and canoes on mine etc. Let my youngest brother drag his 26ft travel trailer

very nice, we looked in to a 10k 24 or 28 foot tag a long, mattis in Altoona was the best local price we were around 10 grand with a 20 foot awning rv door and other good stuff. then I found out I couldn't tow 10k so that was down the shitter. so one day bigger truck , and a bad ass mobile storage shed to go camping in.
