Andrew and I both discovered that the dude who owned this Jeep before must have been a Jeep guy to some extent. Reason being the front tow hooks are not stock units. They are custom4x4 brand, all the hardware was like brand new, so my guess is, this (Person traded the Jeep in on somthing else to build) Tow hooks, bumper, fogs, end caps, shocks, ect to be for sale real soon. So keep watch!

first thing on my agenda was the Xcase, I used the 96's back half and installed it on the 01, and vice versa.

Holes drilled, man does this job suck... 01's and maybe older have reinforced frame's and in one place I have found the wall is up to 1/2in thick, my unibit wasnt up to the job, so a 3/4in reamer made the job cake work. Air drill FTW! I still have 2 more holes to drill :(

Hmm, wonder if they did that for a good reason or just to save money on gear sets?

Nothing, its getting the 01's stock suspension so I can keep it mobile, then its really just up for grabs, it has a salvage title right now.

Actually you have it backwards the LP housing with a standard rotation gear set is about 20% stronger then a HP with reverse rotation gear set, it has to do with how the pinion gear & ring gear mate up and angle & cut of the gear. If you take a look at Currie HP9” compared to a standard rotation F9” this why they put the limitation on their center sections, and why reverse rotation gear sets are only available in lower numerical ratio’s compared to standard rotation ratio’s.

A Dana 30 is a Front axle. High Pinion is stronger when moving forward, just as a LP rear is stronger while the vehicle is trying to move forward. Which is why the HPD30 is the more desireable front end for TJ's and XJ's. Dont make me pull the engineering card....

J the jeep's looking good. Get that button'd up so we can take a day or two and go wheeling over spring break.

HP front axles are stronger the LP, which is what a D30 is. As for the Currie HP9", the reason they put limits on them, is because they aren't real 9"s they use special 8.8 gears. If you want a real HP 9", the only company that makes one is True Hi9, they offer up to a 5.38 gear(talking about 6.12s), and I've never heard of anyone breaking one!!

Rear should be a 1hr job with two people. Pull 4 bolts from the springs, pull the shocks and brake lines, and swap the entire assembly over to the 01. Repeat in reverse order for the 96.

The kicker at the end is ALWAYS the brakes...:070:

You could drill out that hole where that bolt broke off then retap it. Afterall, you do have a nice tap set now :039:

:082: yeah, I wondered why the tap used to tap the forward most holes looked used... Funny how that works!

jeepxj3
02-20-2007, 01:00 PM
Honestly the best way I have found to drill those holes, was to drill a pilot hole on each side then use the unibit to open up the hole just enough to see inside the frame rail. This way you can judge where you need to ream the hole out. once everything is lined up and you have somewhat of a hole started. Take the 3/4in hole saw to drill through the inner supports. I also used a reamer bit about 12in long to boar straight through the frame once the hole was opened up enough. They recomend that you drill the frame out 15/16's or somthing huge, but I was able to do it with only 3/4 in holes, so I was dead on with all of my measurements.

Rotate PS Long Arm in skid so zerk faces up
Mount upper links
Steering all bolted up
Mounted front sway bar, and loosened end links so they can be adjusted later.

you had one break? I've had mine cut for about two years now and mine have been fine. Were your shocks alittle to long for the suspension or did it pull off?

I agree, the only reason they should have broken is if your shocks were too short for the job at hand. other than that, there should not be that much stress on those mounts from the shocks.

Muzikman
02-21-2007, 12:47 PM
It has to do with the way Rock Krawler built their Gen 1 suspension that mine boke. But after it broke, I can see how thin and weak those spring/shock mounts are.

That thing is looking great!

the way his arms work they won't hurt at all being that close to the spring/shock mount brackets

all you'd need is a small airgap to make sure the two don't wear by rubbing each other when a bushing flexs

I need to get the vehicle weight on it first, then ill adjust the pinion angle. These arms make that job a walk in the park!

I have, Andrew helped out a $hit ton this past weekend, other than that its been all me. Thats how I roll, its hard to get help when lifting your own junk. The red XJ went the same route, but it was easier to drive with a 4.5in lift in the rear and 3in lift up front on 31's...

I still have a few loose ends I need to tie up.

Front brake lines
Rear Axles (Alloys)
Hybrid the front with the 01 outters
Wire the fogs

I have plans to go get her aligned tomorrow. Hopfully all goes well!

do you have a CV rear shaft? at rest the rear pinion should be pointing a little lower then parallel with the shaft. it kinda looks like it's pointing up. when you accelerate the axle wraps up, giving it more angle.

Your pinion angle does look a little high. When you had the 6* shims, they worked perfect for the 4.5" springs...but now that you have that shackle in there its taking up some of your drive angle. 4* shims should set that up perfect.

Nice to see some daytime pics btw

Okay, back off topic for a second..

You will notice that the board will slow down a little as the weather breaks. Everyone will be outside soaking up the warmer temps and sunlight. It will not last long, as the warmer temps also equal more camping excursions.

I can't wait to go camping!

Ok, sorry about the interuption... Now back to your original thread.
