I just installed lights on windshield brackets, I would like to paint the covers .They are white plastic and i want to paint them black. Has anyone had any luck with the plastic rattle can paints or should I just look for new covers.
thanks

Both Krylon and Rustoleum make a spray can specifically for plastic parts. I know the Krylon stuff is called "Fusion," but I'm not sure of the name for the Rustoleum stuff. They both work pretty well, and can be found at your local HomieDepot.

do you know if you have to scuff the covers up with 800 grit or anything

I did my Hella 500 covers with Krylon, and just cleaned then well with lacquer thinner. I don't recall if you're supposed to sand or not, I'd say follow the directions on the can.

I would hit them with a rather heavy grit just to knock the smooth shine off the plastic (120 grit I think would work). Hella covers are already textured, I am not sure if your covers are or not.

the outside edges are textured but the face is smooth, I think i'll give the face a quick hit with the paper, just to give the paint something to adhere to. thanks

I did my flares with Krylon. I did scuff them with sandpaper, then cleaned them with lacquer thinner. Make sure you do a couple light coats, dont try to do them in one shot, it may have a reaction to the plastic.

Krylon Fusion would be your best bet for plastic. I've used the other stuff and it doesnt hold up as well as the fusion does. It sticks, but the first time you bend or flex the piece of plastic it chips off.:102:

Use Krylon Fusion in the black Satin variety.

DONT use sand paper to scuff them. Use a scotch-brite RED pad. It wont leave gouges that make the paint look like shit when its done.

wouldn't have mattered if i used a cheese grader to scuff them, after wheeling with you guys there trashed!
