OverkillZJ

Well I got back to work on the ZJ yesterday, and wasn’t too happy with what I found. First I tore the diff apart since I knew there was something wrong in there. Sure enough…. Ring gears shot, but worse, my $390 no-slip locker is destroyed since the 4 pins that hold the two halves of the locker together sheered off. I’m theorizing that one got caught up in the gears taking a few of the teeth out. The locker broke due to the worn out carrier causing the spacing of the locker to be wrong. Moral of the story? When you rebuild an axle, don’t skimp. Replace it when in doubt so it doesn’t ruin your good parts with it… From the looks of that locker, I’d been in 3 wheel drive for awhile. I’m thinking I’m going to replace it with a Detroit. That gets rid of the carrier as a weak point altogether.

You know that indistructible Currie steering? Ya, not so indestructible! I only bent the tie rod itself slightly, but I killed the end where it connects to the pitman arm big time, needs replaced.

Then I realized the track bar had to come off since I need to fix that wallowed out hole I found last year, and I’m replacing the shocks and control arm bushings anyway, so I guess that just led to the whole axle being removed anyway!

I think I just need new springs for the passenger side mirror, but not to replace the entire thing. This is good… must be cheaper…

Here are the pins which sheered off. UGH.
